What wouldn’t you shoot?

For the majority I shoot things that either are or are likely to cause issues. Big stag, 12-14 point? Why would I shoot it. For my own gain, nothing more. Fox cubs running around now lambing where I am has finished? No need, live and let live...
What about all of the ground nesting birds?

I counted a covey of 39 grey partridge on my ground last year, they are there in part because foxes get shot on sight.

We also have lapwing meeting every year and I did see a lone stone curlew 2 years ago.

They deserve a break for a while. Unfortunately where I am there are minimal ground nesting birds so doesn't make a massive difference to their numbers. Obviously if it was the other way around then sure fox is fair game

To counter that - I had partridges with chicks in a pile of boulders near my house, I have watched and photographed a fox walking past them on a few occasions - it’s just not that interested in them for some reason…

You get stupid foxes as well as stupid people.

I have lived in this area for 36 years, I have never seen partridge numbers as high as they currently are on my ground. That is primarily down to predator control plus conservation planting strips, but mainly the predator control as the planting was there when I got there, very few greys were or lapwings.

Muntjac Does, Unless juvenile or heavily pregnant.
I shoot all muntjac on sight unless specifically after fallow. Invasive species... and zero chance of eradication, so its just a numbers game. Ive certainly shot them when within days of dropping.

Also I think a youngish doe is probably the best venison Ive eaten. All personal perspective.

This sounds great !
Good man

If I can eat it, or bring something home.

With the incoming trophy ban, that automaticly excludes a lot of animals like large cats, certain bears etc. (Apparently black bear tastes good?)

Over here ill shoot anything thats legal, probably wouldn’t touch a vixen with cubs, not that I'm allowed to deal with foxes on the estate I visit.

Game birds I would shoot if I plan to eat all the ones I shoot assuming I can keep track on where they fall and try pick them up after myself.

That tag “invasive species”means nothing, its used as an excuse by some people to treat some species with a lack of respect and by officialdom to justify a lack of policy.
Once something is established, ineradicable and breeding in the wild its no longer a non native, its now part of our wildlife.

You obviously don't have a problem with leaving dependent fawns to starve to death :(

This statement crops up all the time , what about rabbits, pigeons , corvids , rats , foxes and all other vermin that are shot through the breeding season .

Maybe all shooting should cease through Spring and Summer 🤣
