Head Torch Recommendations

I have had a few over the years. There are lots on the market these days. I have just renewed mine for a slightly larger head torch off Amazon. Looking for wounded or dead Sika in forestry plantations in Scotland, you need something robust and waterproof.
I paid £35 and it has 4 rechargeable batteries, which you can also power off this if needs be. Its made in China, but then most are.
Zoom Headlights.
Well made, adjustable beam, and the batteries last a long time. Heavier than some of the other torches on the market, but I think good value.

I use 1 of these. Lasts ages and has a red light, plus 3 different brightness setting for the white light.

Thanks all for the input, I was leaning towards a nitecore before all the recommendations came in. Thanks to @Sharpie for the heads up on the NU17.

I’ve gone for one of those and I’ll see how I get on.

Cheers.

Glad to help. I'm sure you will be delighted. Let us know what you think of it.

Whichever option above you choose my advice would be to go cheap. LED's are universally good these days and if all you need is occasional and 'around the home and garden' use then splashing for a Petzl or similar is like buying a Blaser when all you do is humane despatch.

If you're anything like me one of two things will happen anyway .. You'll leave the batteries in during Summer and they'll leak and knacker the torch completely, or you'll stick it in a pocket from which it will fall, never to be found again. Cheap ones are better in both scenarios ;)

My own is an Ever Ready job from B+Q. It does red or white light and was cheap as chips. It still works despite once being worn during an unexpected moonlight swim which resulted in it having to be emptied and dried out in the oven.
Sorry, must disagree with all of that. In particular that all LEDs are good nowadays. They really are not, the cheap ones often have a blueish tint, are inefficient, and poorly focussed for a useful beam. Blue tint BTW is hopeless in mist or fog, just bounces back at you. A warm-white, or ideally a high CRI LED is vastly superior.

As for "buy cheap", well if you do, as with your Ever Ready thing, running from typically three AAA batteries, a pack of four decent branded ones will cost about £5. So three packs (four reloads) will cost about £15. Plus whatever you paid for it at B&Q.

Throwing away disposable batteries is hardly very eco either, plus you would need to carrying a spare set with you for anything other than the most casual use. A properly waterproof thing will also not need to be dried out after an unplanned swim/dunking/rain, such as yours suffered. Nor will lithium rechargeables leak and knacker it.

Whereas my recommendation, the NU17, an unquestionably superior device, costs altogether, delivered next day (if you are on Amazon Prime) ... £15. I truly do not understand how they can do it for that price. Reminder to self, buy another one too, whilst the deal lasts. I've had mine for nearly a year now, it has seen quite a bit of use even just dog walking or taking a stroll around my woods at night, as I like to do. Battery still seems to be as fresh as when new.

Which is the better bargain ?

The NU25 is also a solid choice, as others have said. Even at 2.5 time the price of the NU17. Difficult to separate them on features. Both of these also include a very well made charging cable. All you need extra is e.g. your mobile 'phone charger. Unless you live in the dark ages and don't even have a mobile 'phone.

When I do need a really powerful torch, e.g. an evening stalk at last light, with the potential for a tricky follow-up of a runner, I also pack a genuine > 1000 lumen USB rechargeable hand torch.

NU17 data:

NU25 data:

Salient comparison:

NU17 lasts 6hrs at high setting of 130 lumens. 43m range. NU25 lasts 5hrs at 190 lumen high setting, 61m range (tighter optic, a tiny bit more power, probably visually indistinguishable, but also less useful spill). Ignore headline NU25 360 lumen "turbo" setting, this is limited to 30 seconds before overheating. Could still be useful though, nice to have.

NU25 is far weaker on high CRI, and red, less than half as powerful, because it only has one LED for each, instead of the two in the NU17. This matters a lot to me, particularly the red. With my NU17 it is strong enough to walk around comfortably outdoors whilst keeping my night vision. I suspect the NU25 is not. The low red setting, also the white, 1 lumen only, is just a glimmer, enough to find your way in a bedroom, tent etc without disturbing anyone whilst you e.g. get up for a pee.

A tip, if in company, dangle your head torch from your neck instead, so people can look at you without being dazzled. Makes a great difference. The Nitecores are great for this, if you dangle them upside down the bracket rests on your chest and can be set to just the right angle to use this way, actually my preferred method, particularly when wearing a hat.

@Sharpie out of interest what 1000 lumen torch do you have / recommend?

Led technology has passed me by a bit to be honest, I went from a clubman lamp to a NV scope, so missed out any Led torches.

Lots to choose from nowadays. This is what I chose, quite a few years ago, the X5 from www.otrlight.com. Still listed for 2022 but a quick search failed to find a vendor.. Mine is I think a limited edition with a warm white LED. Massive 26650 5Ah cell, USB rechargeable too. A satisfyingly chunky thing. Bought it from a Chinese supplier for ISTR £18, shipped. Banggood.com. It is the model shown on the headline section, third dot from the left. 26650 torches, BTW can also accept the commonplace 18650 cells, with a simple plastic sleeve adaptor.

Also picked up a tiny U16, again USB rechargeable, replaceable battery, but can also take CR2 lithiums as well. About £12 as I recall. Both have turned out to be gems.

If you can find these anywhere, probably still a good choice. But as I said, nowadays the market is flooded with all sorts of similar things, at all price points, Sometimes some seemingly too cheap to be true things (like mine) are actually just about as good as the premium brands, like Olight, even so similar that they might even have been made in the same factory, just branded differently for a different market. But it's hard to know. Some can be shockingly shoddy as well.

Ledlenser H7R Core not cheap but a great piece of kit very bright and fully adjustable.

I know a few members (including myself) bought these after @gixer1 mentioned them. SO far I've absolutely no complaints. I bought two, and they've been great!

For the money these are unbeatable. @gixer1 mentioned them on here last autumn. So good that all my colleagues use them now! Can’t recommend highly enough.

The odd thing is - they were £10 when I bought them and now I can’t find them on eBay - they seem to be on some of the chinese sales type sites for £30-40!

Black diamond are great, had a cheap dual battery led from China cheap, worked great until it got wet , then sparks everywhere, can,t remember the brand, white light on front red on rear be careful.

Led lenser buy once buy right they are the scmidt and bender of torches I have a couple a h14r.2 which is superb spot to flood at a simple push and two brightness settings charges with a USB and lasts for ages
And a mh10 which does all of the above but only has 1/2 the battery life buts smaller and lighter
As.mentioned above I wouldn't buy anything now that takes non rechargeable batteries they always leak and wreck the device

Rechargeable from decathlon about £17 keep a charging lead in the car .
Absolute best thing about it
First press soft red light if you leave it on the next press turns it off.
Two press for solid white third press brighter forth press off.
No cycling through all flashing and brightest settings to turn off .

I picked up one of these at Cotswold Outdoor recently.

So far, so good. Very small and light and comes in a little hard plastic case. £25. You hardly know it’s in your pocket.

Always helps to actually attaché the image!
