6.5x55 Tikka shortage.

A quick update , I was at the local hardware store today and had a look at their ammo selection , hardware stores sell ammo here , and got a bit of a shock . A box of Hornady 6.5X55 Match ammo ( all they had in stock ) was over $100 CDN . There were about six different varieties of 6.5CM for sale . The cheapest , federal , was $ 30 CDN a box , the most expensive was $ 48 . That alone will spell the end of the 6.5X55 as a popular cartridge . I'm a reloader so it doesn't really affect me , but for those who use factory ammo , it would be an obvious choice .

Do the majority of shooters in Canada shoot factory or reload?

At my local RFDs creedmoor and 6.5x55 ammunition are on a par for similar loadings, as is availability.

The majority shoot factory ammo . There is a large market here , as you can imagine , so a lot of places stock ammo of one kind or another . 6.5X55 ammo has , for reasons unknown to me , become scarce lately .

Wonder why??
I was at the Sports Center in the city and they had, amongst the thousands of boxes of factory ammo on the shelves, the usual 4 boxes of 6.5x55. Nothing has changed on this side of the border.... ~Muir

Probably because we're at the end of the supply chain . Believe it or not , there isn't any 30/06 ammo available around here either , there hasn't been for about a month . Not just a limited selection , there isn't a box to be found .

Ah there it is then, low on 6.5x55, out of .30-06, my gut feeling tells me there will also be low stock of .222 rem and hardly any 12g shotgun cartridges.
Clearly some shooters of class and style have been on a spree in Canada!

Have you looked at the Steyr SM12? I have one in 6.5x55 and it’s a sweet rifle.
Not as flashy as a sako or a tikka but not as expensive but just as deadly on things with antlers.

Set trigger is also fun!!
Only thing is the stock flexes quite a bit if you have a bipod on it - nothing that can’t be fixed by filling all of the voids inside the forend with miliput and bringing the bipod stud back 3”.

I was considering getting either 6.5x55 or 6.5CM. I decided on the CM based on the fact that CM sales were very strong more than 10 years after it was released (i.e. it was not going to be a fad calibre - one of my concerns) and the fact my gunsmith (I decided to go custom) told me that 40% of his rebarelling work was to convert rifles to 6.5 CM. In my humble opinion, apart from if you live in Scandinavia, it is a no brainer to buy 6.5 CM (unless all your reloading kit is for 6.5 x55).
