Carcase Quality

To be fair, while I thought dsc1 was very good, it was really light on actually processing the carcass. I know it’s not practical for everyone to do a real gralloch, but I don’t think we were even shown a video. I came out of it as a ‘trained hunter’ which I thought was a generous title to say the least!

I believe there was a thread posted here a few weeks ago that splitting the Pelvis seems very locational e.g more common In Scotland, not common In England, however Yeah... yikes that is a bit battered, no clue why anyone would think that's sane.

I couldn’t even bring myself to even take it to the dealer let alone expect a dealer to accept it!
I couldn’t have been the only one complaining about his work , I personally try to take pride in delivering a carcass to the best of my ability . We all do them slightly different but when you see a carcass clean , cut properly and presentable that’s what all stalkers should strive towards . I’ve seen carcasses in larders that were really well done and a credit to the person involved . Don’t get me wrong I’ve had deer that I’ve caught slightly back and ended up with staining on the flanks but it will wash of with a good pair of marigolds 😁👍

There’s no shame in some deer shooters , I don’t call them deer stalkers , game dealers and what the dealer should accept is mind blowing , seen it a few times down our way with one guy who continually left badly gralloched and filthy carcasses into the local chiller , it got that bad I complained without mention of his name and the dealer admitted he knew who I was on about and that he’d been given one last chance to tidy up or go somewhere else , this guy just didn’t care what they looked like but he blagged on and on about how good he was .. as we say “ all the gear and no idea”, I took this picture of his tagged carcass , the anal canal had pellets inside it , the pelvis hadn’t been split so I couldn’t get a clear picture , the rib cage hadn’t been cut either and the chest cavity was discoloured with peaty water and blood . Pathetic and effortless effort .
Why is the game dealer accepting this standard even once let alone giving him one ‘last chance’? He is as much to blame for this as the cowboy who dropped it off, clearly his standards are no higher otherwise he wouldn’t accept it.

By accepting that standard he's got the perfect excuse to set his prices to the lowest common denominator, and pay a much lower price across the board, even for well presented animals.

I thought the minimum was a video.

Although quite a few years ago now, I did mine at a location with a larder. Had one suspended and another on cradle.

Took lots of photos as you did then. Anyone doing DSC1 should really pick a place that has the correct facilities - Andy Papworth at Eridge Park or Jim or Malcolm at Deer Game and Vermin Management are people that Id trust to run a good course.

I think it was the fact that some of the less reputable trainers were cutting corners like this that made dmq move the goalposts to dsc2 in order to keep the fsa off their backs.

Your right 👍. His driver was more to the point with what was acceptable than the boss was .

Aye it seems to be more common up here . As long as the end result is a clean passage then it’s cool .

This topic goes hand in hand with the poor price we all receive for carcasses. Until people remember and treat each carcass as food, and stop presenting crap unfinished bodies which have been badly stored to the dealers why would they even think about higher prices?
There is a lot of machoism in the stalking world, for some reason people would rather struggle on than ask for help or learn.

Its because people cant be arsed!

I have been told of stalkers who hang carcasses with bailer twine and refuse to buy hooks and demand top £££, some hang deer to set then lay them on the floor to make room for more.

Some proper horror stories out there i will assure you!

Its pure laziness and tight fistedness nothing more.

Next time i will probably turn my chiller off will be the end of march, so a rough tot up of my chiller running costs os probably £500-£600 for the winter.

You want to earn good money you need to treat the carcasses with respect.

Some of it is laziness, I agree but it is also education you can gain every certificate under the sun and and become a "professional deer manager" with no experience whatsoever.
People need to be open to learning but also teaching.
As for horror stories, the self proclaimed "deer managers" better known as weekend warriors are probably the worst locally.

The best carcasses are done suspended but not everyone is lucky to have the facilities on site.
I'm not saying the ones done on the ground are not ok but I can tell a mile away the ones done suspended and left to set and the ones that are even done suspended and then led down straight after.

It's interesting, we always have people knocking the bosses door down to solve all our deer problems.
The boss sends them my way, everyone gets the same offer if you want to shoot with us you start with larder work. When I'm happy with your standard you will get to start sitting out with me or one of my experienced team, to ensure standards are met.
It's amazing how many are offended and get the hump and we never hear from again. Because I won't take the fist full of certificates as they are the best thing since sliced bread.
