Carcase Quality

The only way you get a good clean carcasses is through practice!
Correct
I shot 40 animals between L1 and L2, no one does that anymore!
Not sure about that. I also had a lot but felt the pressure to have done even more as mine were mainly MJ, getting on the other species brought out the confidence. Its all about getting decent mentors to show you, take you through slowly and then get on with it until speed and competence is second nature.

One of the weakness of DMQ is a lack of Continuous Professional Education and re-qualifying like many industries and lets face it, a lot of people learnt for DSC1 then promptly forgot any regulations for temperature etc.

Because theres no set standard by the GDs across the country, there wont be any set standard for carcass presentation.

It's interesting, we always have people knocking the bosses door down to solve all our deer problems.
The boss sends them my way, everyone gets the same offer if you want to shoot with us you start with larder work. When I'm happy with your standard you will get to start sitting out with me or one of my experienced team, to ensure standards are met.
It's amazing how many are offended and get the hump and we never hear from again. Because I won't take the fist full of certificates as they are the best thing since sliced bread.
And as it should be!

I suppose that it shouldn't come as a great surprise to realise that there will be huge difference in quality of carcase handling. You have only got to stand in a mens toilet and see the amount of people walking out without washing their hands, sometimes after coming out of the traps. I believe its the same with women. If that's your attitude to hygiene then what hope is there.
If you don't take hygiene seriously I am sure that bacteria won't be in the forefront of your mind.

If you want to see modern day acceptable standards for deer carcass presentation to FSA regulations. Ask to go into a multi million pound UK cattle or sheep abattoir that are also under FSA regulations . Food poisoning wholesale is only a matter of time. We as inspectors had to have basic food hygiene certificates, some of the foreign workers didn't have the basic personal hygiene knowledge. This is fact.

It’s hard to now when you don’t get the large game handling certification with L1 anymore. How are people supposed to go out and shoot lots of deer to gain experience for L2 when they can’t sell them!

A mate of mine paid to do the large hame cert, nature of the beast these days all ££££

But what does it matter now? You only have to do 1 animal for L2 now, so you only have to get it right on the day and be bristol fashion on your questions bobs your fanny!

I only stalk with people who are either DSC2 or are working towards it. Standards are very high. Those working towards it all know what is expected and will get there with training and practise. It takes a robust person to pick someone up and point out their errors. Complaining about them without offering help and guidance is no good. Anyone who's not happy with the standard of others needs to grow a pair and try to help. I would say that most (not all) will take it on board if spoken to in the right way.

there is a vast difference between the people you stalk with and the general stalking public

I guess that's easy for me as I teach fly fishing! ;)
The photo I put above, it was too late to show the guy how to do it, but 12 months ago I came across a young guy at the game dealers who had made the same mistake, I offered my help, and showed him, he is now a deer stalking friend.

Welll, I don’t need the shooting but would be happy to come and learn the larder work. I think it is my one area of weakness, don’t get me wrong, if I mess up a carcass it will get condemned. I wouldn’t take the risk.

I’ll do a simple clean gralloch video, when i get 5, out on the reds again later in the week.

As for giving up the game, just flicked through and the 3 muntjac on a single gambrel that get my goat, Jesus gambrels are not expensive!

Ive seen
There is a chap on that giving up the game group today who has just done a ‘humane’ dispatch of a CWD by strangling it with a piece of rope!!
Ive seen putting a blanket over a dying deer to make the ‘last moments comfortable’ from a dog attack and an RTA.

The average person has zero clue but they vote and they have an opinion on what we do. Every time theres a substandard carcass it weakens any argument for what we do.
