30-06 Too powerful for UK

Load of bollocks - show me where in the U.K. legislation it says a maximum caliber for deer.

I have a .300wm and .45-70 for deer in the U.K., both on open ticket, and I know LOADS of people with a .30-06 for deer, also all fully open.

I see no reason why he can’t have a .30-06, it’s a superb deer cartridge. It’s even listed in the guidance as I recall, might be worth showing that to the FEO!

That says you can use the .375 in the UK on open conditions. Never disputed that. However was your good reason for having a .375 for UK use? Or was it foreign use, but the police also allow you to use it in the UK?
A mate of mine got his .375 granted specifically with the reason of use in the U.K. on large red deer in Scotland in thick forestry. He has it all fully open, deer and AOLQ.

I would inform the FEO in writing that the 30.06 and .308 are the same caliber and ask them to explain in detail why they think the 30.06 is too powerful.
And don’t forget to mention that standard issue for Forestry England for all deer control is the 308 Win. And the 308?win and 30-06 are pretty much the same in terms energy etc in most common loadings, especially once you get out to 150 to 200m.

Yes it might be 100 fps faster, but that is leas than 5% difference. And in terms of public sector pay award its less than whats on offer abd as you will appreciate that in real terms this square root of bugger all.

Or just ask the fool to specify exactly how much safer it is to be shot with any other centrefire calibre. There's no essential difference between rifle cartridges at all with respect to public safety.

I have a 30-06 with an Aimpoint zeroed at 80 metres and a Swaro 1-6x24 illuminated, zeroed at 1" high at 100 metres. I can use either mounted for the terrain I use when on Driven Boar hunts. In the 30-06 I use 180gn or 220gn bullets.
I also have a .308 mounted with a Schmidt 3-12x50 zeroed at 1" high at 100 metres and use 150gn bullets for Deer.
I have AOLQ also, and an 'open' FC so I can use either wherever I have permission and it is safe to do so.
Incidentally, I also have several of those .30 Sabots as used with Accelerator bullets and as I also have a .222 rifle could load some up if I wanted to, however having used them quite some years ago and found them very inaccurate I no longer use them.

They gave you a half inch rifle for deer? And I thought my lot were accommodating!

It does baffle me that a lot of certificates have the badger thing specifically written on them. The basic lawful quarry wording works perfectly fine for them. It almost reads like you can't shoot badgers, even if you have the correct authority?

7.62x51/.308 should be 2,400-2,600, the .30-06 is 2,600-3,000. Not your fault, but it's the way the table has been arranged

Yes. Looking at the Firearms Guide table again, it would appear that MEs are out of step where two calibers are concatonated and displayed over two lines.

But...using the corrected values above, there is sub 10% difference between the rounds. Patently, the 30.06 cannot be described as "too powerful". It is pretty much at parity with the .308.

I get that many stalkers want “more” calibers but from a U.K. stalking point of view what does the 30-06 do that a 308/270 won’t
That’s what I said. This seems not to be about ‘if’ 3006 is a suitable UK deer round - it is, but what ‘need’ the applicant has for wanting another deer round.

The Firearms Acts don't recognise "need " or "desire" . "Good Reason" is what is required.
q) If a guy has three Mercs two BMW’s and Maserati in his garage but decides he now needs a Ferrari as well; who or what is to stop him?
a) No one….

Why should firearms ownership be any different?
After all said and done the OP’s friend is a responsible law abiding citizen otherwise he would never have been granted his FAC.
