300 win mag

Foxyboy you have obviously never shot a .300 Win-Mag. I shot one for several years using 180 grain Lapua Mega projectiles i personally never destroyed ( several hundred) a single Muntjac CWD Roe with it never bruised my shoulder suffered a flinch loosen any fillings. Several people shot their first Deer with myself using my .300 including my grandson ( 12 years old at the time) . Mine was granted by Cambridgeshire open with AOLQ
Indeed so nor have I ever felt under gunned with a 6.5 or .308 both of which will kill deer much further than I would wish to shoot them. I just don’t see the need but if it floats your boat that’s ok by me.

I agree at the time my culling caliber was a .25-06 which i have now rebaralled in 6.5x55 which puts Fallow down just as quick and as far as my previous 25-06 and 300 Win-Mag 👍

Seeing that the 300 win mag is becoming more and more popular how is everyone who has one justifying it to their feo? I know they can become very twitchy when it comes down to magnum calibres. I’ve always fancied one but I’m pretty certain it would get refused because I already have a 308 for stalking, which is predominantly fallow. But would I would want to keep the 308 with the fallow becoming even wiser could you get granted one for longer range shooting?
I spoke to my FEO and explained the requirement for a different set up of rifle and a different calibre (.300 WSM) for hill/open ground compared to my .308 - I explained additional energy and less wind drift due to heavier bullet options as well as the greater margin for error should a shot hit in a less than ideal POI.
This variation was approved and I purchased a used Tikka T3 Varmint off here, changed the stock and cracked on. Since then I’ll have shot 50+ deer with that rifle alone, hundreds of round at targets and mid last year I had a new custom barrel put on it by @Ronin, it’s now wickedly accurate.
It is a rifle I cannot see being without, it hits with authority at any and all ranges I’ve used it at (I will leave that at ‘far enough’) and the meat damage hasn’t been horrendous, despite what some people may lead you to believe, if you choose the correct bullet.

There is no reason that variation should be refused providing you are reasonable about how you show your good reason and it doesn’t boil down to ‘I just want a new toy’.

Hope this helps,
Ben

Rubbish, absolute rubbish.
Some of the opinions on here are based on ignorance and most certainly not on experience.
Are there some on here who are wannabe FEO's ??? !!!!
Mention magnum rifles or .270 win and out of the woodwork come all the experts. Most of whom have never owned one but they will tell you of horrendous recoil and ear splitting noise.

Would a .300WM be a reasonable choice for boar in the u.k?
No investment here as I don’t plan to shoot boar anytime soon just wondering.

Rubbish, absolute rubbish.
That may well indeed be your honest opinion based on your experiences but on the few occasions I shot the 300 mag my experiences clearly did not match yours - even moderated I found the rifles to be very unpleasant to use compared to my go-to .308 and even more noticeably of course to my 6.5x66SE. Others on each occasion found the same so we can’t all be wooses - I hope!
For interest - the attached details are from Chuck Hawkes Recoil Table - for simplicity I have included only typical bullet weights for the UK which I trust give a fair picture of recoil energy, heavier bullets would likely increase the recoil.
243 7.8 ft lbs
6.5 Creedmoor. 11.1
270 Win. 19.2
.308. 16
30:06. 17.6
300 Mag. 23.5

It is clearly absolutely and utterly impossible to shoot larger calibres accurately, especially when unmoderated! Let’s think of the flinching, the sore ears, the neighbors complaining yards yada yada…. As I’ve said, totally impossible!! Don’t try it… ever!! It won’t work and it will start your life on a sorry spiral into unhappiness and destitution ☹️

I have a 300 wm bergara among other smaller rifles and can happily say that with the big wildcat mod on it is a pleasure to shoot, no terrible recoil at all. Take off the mod and it does kick a bit so I wouldn't want to shot hundreds of rounds but for hunting it is a pleasure. Obviously shot placement matters more than bullet weight but for a rutting fallow or red it does tend to knock them over well. Worst thing is £60 per 20 rounds .I use my 243 more but dont find the 300 causes too much meat damage.
I have toyed with the idea of giving it up for something a little smaller but with all the current licencing bs am leaving alone and I like it.

I shoot 165g rounds through my 300wm I have a Sauer top end moderator on it ( F&D in makeup ) it is a bit punchier to shoot than my 270 but not massively so. IMHO the only time I really notice recoil is when zeroing which I always do prone off bags, you know it’s coming and there is no ” hunting” element to the shot

My 300wm is a bit on the heavy side for stalking, great for shooting valley to valley. Recoil is not worth mentioning and I plan to build a much lighter 300wm this year.
Accuracy is ok.

That may well indeed be your honest opinion based on your experiences
Yes true, my own and many others that use the same or in many cases a lot bigger. I shot Sika in the Wicklow`s with a .300 wm (and 270) both moderated and so easy to use as such and for the life of me I cannot see how anyone could complain about a modded 300. We arent allowed mods here and thus we use all calibres unmodded. Its just something that we see as the norm and become very used too. My SD Pommy mate put 2 shots into 15mm @ 100 with one of my .300 mags when checking it for his hunting use. Good shooting and nary a complaint re recoil especially after a lifetime of using mods, btw he isnt a big bloke either.
My current go to for the last few years runs in the mid 30`s recoil wise so the 300 mag isnt any bother. Note bold type.
I sold my .300 H&H to a good mate, he shot a beautiful Hog Deer Stag last week with it.....bastard!
I see him on my bench shooting his unmodded .375 H&H also,no sweat at all with tight groups.

Took my 300 WM to SA last year without the sound moderator, grouping still acceptable and I don’t flinch when using my other rifles as some have said in the previous comments. And I have not found any significant meat damage if you put the bullet into the right place.

Yeah I must admit my .300 is also horrifically inaccurate due to the ear splitting volume and retina detaching recoil. Don’t know how I put up with it really…
Nice - purely as an experiment and to help me get over my collie-wobbles you could always gift it to me?
