25-06, any good?

Not anymore!

I seen that 134g the other day on hornadys website could be a gamechanger

I weighed one up for a while because I saw a rifle that liked but I could never convince myself it offered more advantages over the .270? Haven’t shot one though so happy to be proven wrong.

The sorriest killings of deer I ever saw was three deer shot with 25-06. That was not to say it was the cartridge's fault. Wrong bullet choice, I'm certain, in at least two cases.
I'm not certain I'd buy one in a Ruger #1. Beautiful looking but can be a pain to get shooting correctly depending on the vintage of gun.~Muir
Thank you for your share of experience,

Will keep it in mind, most likely start my load development on the gallery range before taking it on outings

It's like a .243 on steroids & good for anything in the UK. Minimal muzzle flip so you see quarry reaction easily. Brilliant if you load your own ammunition, less so if you're buying commercial ammunition. Accepted it's a niche market though. If you like it - you like it! Fantastic if longer range is needed - i.e. reds on open hill

"There is no replacement for displacement", as the old addage goes, had several 25-06's even a ruger no1, my only caveat would be,beware the No1, they are finnicky to get to shoot. great cartridge and now with a good selection of bullets available more than adequate for most situations in the UK..
Did build a No1 in 6.5-06 called it the creedmoore killer.

There's some must like it despite that with equal length barrels a 130 grain bullet in the .270 is quicker than a 120 grain bullet in a .25/06 and with a 100 grain bullet the .243 Winchester is about the same. The .25/06 is a "niche" cartridge. But in that niche it does the job it does extremely well. The question the OP needs to ask is that niche sufficiently adequate for his needs?
Personally speaking I wouldn’t call a MV difference of over 300 fps ‘about the same’

I must ask, who was the shooter? It must have been a muppet who obviously can't shoot. I'm struggling for a follow up question. If you have the least performance based factory load in a 25-06 and you punch it in just behind the shoulder crease of a Wapiti it isn't going to live long.

Didn't know one of them. HE strung along on a hunt and shot a large mule deer doe six times.. It was still alive when he started to field dress it. Disgusting.
The other two were the same day, same guy. A Sioux who was using varmint bullets. Shot two large whitetails on the same day, losing both of them. ~Muir

That's not a calibre issue. Even with varmint bullets you will still take out at least one lung and an artery. Muppets.

shot only about a dozen deer with 25-06, all with 117g using SST's. knocked them the F*** down quick, but did not kill them quick! none of the bullets excited. distances 75-250yds, game ranging from very small deer to very large deer.

Very impressed with trajectory and knock down effect, very unimpressed with terminal performance. I'd definitely prefer something like a 120g partition in mine, but it was not mine ;-)

Never been a fan of SST in any calibre, they just don't seem to hold together compared to Nosler BT Hunting, Accubond or Partitions.

Greetings all,

Recently i come across a lovely rifle chamber in 25-06.
It's a unusual cal, have anyone use/own one?

What is your take on it?
Good/bad?

Is it like a 30-06 but chamber in a smaller cal?
I've fancied one for a while, but already having .243 and .270 it doesn't really have a place in the cabinet.

Need a 1:7" or 7.5" twist so either rifle makers get smart and put faster twists on 25-06 rifles or 25 Creedmoor may yet become a mainstream cartridge!
I’ve got a fast twist 25 creedmoor that I shoot 131 ace
Yew Tree are doing a 102.5gn copper bullet now. So far I have found it very effective but I don’t have a large sample size yet.
check out Hammer Hunters. Solid copper. Excellent bullet.

I have a Sako 85 in 25/06 and although my stalking days are done I had an extremely enjoyable day at WMS consistently hitting pig sized targets at 850 metres. I know this is not relevant to live stalking but great fun all the same. We always take our own rifles and and have a great time, finishing off the day with Andrew’s .338. Well worth the trek to Wales.
Would love to buy a 45/70 but the police here aren’t keen on the idea, any suggestions please.
