Using home loads in Africa

Has anyone experienced any issue bringing home loads in an MTM box which is then packed in a Pelican case through the airport / Border Security checks

If you're worried about a random jobsworth making up imaginary restrictions, stick the rounds in a factory box. I can't imagine anyone is going to open boxes and go through comparing headstamps and bullets.

Never had an issue, it’s with remembering that the 5kg weight limit is for the ammo not the case and ammo combined

Please forgive the intrusion, but it is germane to the OP's thread.

Some PH's/Outfitters will not allow 'home loads' on their Safari.

May be worth checking with yours.

5 trips and counting never a problem in Namibia or SA. I have travelled most of Europe for the last 25 years and I have never had my ammo. even looked at either going out, arriving or returning.

Yes, we all know that. Checkin staff however always take the 5kg gross attitude. Been there, done that, waved/offered a printout of the airlines regulations regarding firearms and ammunition. Didn’t work,

10 trips to SA and never been a problem.

They take the total weight of ammo + case to be less than 5kg.

try taking 5kg of ammo + the weight of the case at your own peril - you won’t make your flight out of the uk

How many animals are you going to shoot if you need 5kg of ammo for one trip?
One should always take more than you think you need.
Larger calibres have less rounds to the pound !
Then there is maybe re zeroing after a hard time in the aircraft hold.
Maybe some practice rounds.
Maybe a zero check after a rifle is dropped ( sling attachment fails)
Oh, I forgot, the game you are going after.

In my experience the Air lines use 5kg as the gross weight of ammo box and ammo.

Using 30.06 as an example 5kg is 170 rounds. Even if you have a zero problem that is a lot of ammo. Been to Africa several times and never taken or needed 5kg of ammo.

Also been to Africa on more than a dozen hunts. When you take more than one rifle in say .375 or 458 calibres those figures don't apply!
