Renewal with an open ticket

Hi All

For my initial grant and first renewal I was on closed ticket in the TVP area so on my first renewal my reason to possess on various calibres was a bit like war and peace as I had some ground cleared for some calibres some for others and one of my deer rifles was paid stalking.

Now I am on open ticket for all rifles so from reading on previous threads on Stalking directory it seems to be accepted practice to nominate a permission to put the rifles against rather than listing several (assuming you have permission for the quarry you are going to use the firearms for). I got this impression last time I renewed on closed ticket (when I moved to open) as the FEO implied they didnt need me to list several permissions as this was confusing (even though none of them were cleared for one of the calibres I had as I was using this for paid stalking), rather just list one permission send them my permission slip as long as it had suitable reason for all calibres.


Has anyone renewed with TVP recently and is this the way you went about it if on open ticket?

My suggestion would be to over deliver in terms of requirement.

On my renewal with Police Scotland I listed all of my pieces of land where I shoot regularly and also made mention of other places where I had stalked by invitation over the last few years.

You are wanting to build a picture of being active and having need.

Point out that you do need different rifles and set ups. Big difference between shooting a muntjac in Southern beech and hazzle coppice, a tough Sika in commercial forestry or a red stag out on the open hill.

Just putting down one active permission may well raise the question of “why do you need multiple rifles”.

Much better to give a complete picture which provides more than enough good reason.

Remember with Firearms its up to the applicant to demonstrate good reason and need.

My local gun shop is under the impression that when you renewal your FAC after 5 years it automatically goes to a “open ticket” is that correct ?
 
With TVP they were really resistant to opening anything before five years. I know of people who got it done but it was an uphill fight having to prove new permissions regularly that didnt have clearance. Mine got done when I requested it on first renewal.
 
When you put down your pieces of land, speak with land owner first and ask his / her permission to give their name. I put three down on my last renewal earlier this year and all three were contacted. I have an FAC since 1996.

And do not lie. Our club secretary has had at least two calls this year asking “ we have recieved an FAC application / renewal from Joe Bloggs who has said he is a full member of your club”

“No he is not” has been the reply. “He had made a tentative enquiry, been sent an application form but we had never heard another word”.

Not sure that this helps the application.
 
To be fair for club membership (I am also a rifle club member) TVP are asking for the club to print you off a copy of your visit records and ammo use for the past three years now!

No.
If you need your FAC opened, then just ask your local FLD. Doesn't matter how long you've had a FAC for. Could be months, could be years. If you've got a genuine reason for needing it open, and you've gained a bit of experience, then it will be opened at your request.

It’s not for me I got a probation date for the shooting club in September, the guy I go hunting with (my mentor) was talking to our local gun shop and he was under the impression after 5 years it automatically opens if you have DSC1, We thought it was strange. I’m in no rush for anything definitely need more time under my belt

Gun shops are a great source of misinformation with regard to firearms law.
 
Not really relevant, my feo borrowed my phone to talk to a land manager during my renewal interview. Very efficient probably saved everyone hours.

Before I moved from TVP to Herts I had to do this - basically I nominated one permission and that was sufficient.
If they get really picky then then might ask for more esp if you have a lot of rifles in centrefire calibres (unless you do target shooting also) , but I always face one and my FEO (who was a bit of a grumpy sod) was ok.

the problem with that is for clubs such as mine, that have no fixed range (we use Bisley) and no log book (we use attendance record sheets) however to send copies of that sheet requires all other members details to be redacted, so you end up with a piece of paper covered in black rectangles and a hand written scribble! no proof of anything, my FEO did try to reconcile my personal ammo counts with the club record (which are approximate so that the NRA have an idea of the number of rounds sent into the backstop for their maintainence scheduling) but had to accept that we didnt list something that we didnt have to, TVP do seem to be behind the curve on service, but ahead on nit-picking and inventing new ways to make work!

I can see how thats a pain. Its a bit of a new one for me as when I put in for a .223 recently on a variation just for target (all my other stuff is deer and vermin) all I had to so was send in a copy of my membership card and that was it. The round count reconciliation would be interesting as I reload so only really do factory ammo when I need brass.

They do seem to have tightened up a fair bit as on last renewal all I had to do was put down my permissions contact details and that was it. By the looks of it this time round I will need a permission letter that up to date from the farmers.
