Start of the stags

Bit windy up your way! Lol ;-)

not planning to target stags in the traditional off-season, but due to weather this week, I need to get another couple of stags, so being able to pick out a few good cull stags during the hinds is convenient tbh.

Definitely will not be touching the stags from end of the hinds until sept time. But I’m not under pressure for cull figures either.

Isn't that a bit of a contradiction? I'm not planning on targeting stags out of the traditional season but it will be convenient to shoot a few cull stags. And I'm not under any pressure for cull figures and saying I need a couple more stags.
I've probably fallen hook line and sinker for a whined up.

If anyone wants to know what will happen, just look to what’s historically happened in England or with fallow bucks in Scotland.

The English have been able to shoot stags through til April, as has anyone wanting to shoot fallow in Scotland.

The hand wringing about removing the stag close season in Scotland is utterly pitiful hogwash.

Yup, doubt he even has Reds to worry about.

Utterly pitiful hogwash, kill ‘em all, if it’s red it’s dead.

Not many crofters I know able to afford thermals, is angry humza giving out grants for this kit yet?

A Croft is an enclosed piece of agricultural land…………..No need to change, marauding stags can be shot any time of year and at night too !
Never new they didn’t need authorisation for night shooting🤔
Common grazing included in this🤔

So - who is planning to be out for the first day of the new stag season tomorrow?
From everyone I have spoken to/read about etc those with traditional, sporting objectives have continued the old close season on as a voluntary close season

I don't know anyone letting open hill stags this week, even though the rut was late to get going this season is some places

Those that are still shooting stags did so anyway in previous years under a readily available licence

At the end of the day the change in legislation broadens deer management practitioners ability to draw on their own experience and expertise and selectively cull the right deer at the right time in accordance with the deer management policy on their ground.

A similar change to the female season would arguably be beneficial and surely bolster confidence that safe, humane and ethical deer management decisions were capable of being taken by those on the ground in accordance with the land management objectives of the owner/tenant.

Hi there, just wondering if you have anymore info on this?, when I phoned nature scot the other week they were adamant that I needed a night licence to shoot marauding deer on my own land(at night). The fact they were marauding didn't seem to matter.

Cheers

If you read section 18 which refers to night shooting you will see that if deer are causing crop damage you MUST be in possession of a valid night authorisation licence issued by SNH ( NatureScot) in order not to be committing an offence by shooting a deer at night.

The only legitimate reason for lawfully shooting a deer at night without a night authorisation licence would be in the context of a section 25 welfare situation.

I’d suggest that the advice you get from NatureScot is completely correct, remember that they deal with a significant number of night shooting authorisations and also work closely with wildlife officers in Police Scotland so are well versed on the legislation and how it is applied.

If I remember correctly it originally was covered in the 1959 deer act (Scotland) and also under one of the crofting acts. Amended in the 1982 act with the guidance of the Red Deer Commission that only red, sika and hybrids could be shot, min calibre of .270 and your light should be 6 volt or greater ! 😂
The act/SNH guidance may have changed since then of course.
