Well i,ve tried the 58 grain Hornady varmints. They work exceptionally well. Same zero as the sako 90gr rounds ive been using so in situations where i feel its better to use them i shall. Lovely
cold crisp morning to be out and about.Not a huge crater in the carcass as some stated there would be either.

i might be on planet zog on this one but is the frangible bullet not as the name suggests --frangible, thus there should not be anything going anywhere of any significant size/mass after it has impacted the deer?? Yes i shall be placing a high seat in the very near future--and possibly using frangible also i reckon.

You cannot rely on a bullet to break up, I’ve had v-max for completist fail to expand and sierra Varmint bullets.

I don’t doubt it, 35 gr v-max expand and blow rabbits to pieces but I’ve still had a couple completely fail to expand, same with 50s.

My point is you can’t rely on a bullet expanding as they can, and do, fail occasionally.

70 grain Nosler BT from a top end load from a 243 win . Hit behind the Shoulder will often enough not leave and the plastic tip will often be found after running down the skin . BTW i am 100% against the practice , a safe shot is a safe shot and what you really need is some high seats if its about safety the mitigation of a frangible bullet is not truly something you can trust ! You certainly need to be well inside 100 yards !
I only know the above info from a fair bit of experience at shorter range roe, you then need a dealer that is OK with lead contamination because if it pretty fully breaks yo you have just about 68 grains say of lead in the carcass that has sprayed around in the carcass.

By pushing them fast!!

I am just sorting a load for 75 gr v-max, 24” barrel should give me 3500-3600 fps.

3500 fps is generating 2048 ft-lb.

The 58 grain hornady superperformance v-max trundle along at almost 4,000 fps. They're deer legal.

I have found 55gr V-max going quickly to be very deadly on roe, frangible right enough but very messy.
Alternatives I've found effective over the years: 223 60gr SP, 303 with Sierra 125gr SP Gamekings, 270 with Speer 100gr HP, also useful in 6mm. Sierra Gamekings also good in my 6mm Rem and 243. PPU 100gr SP also work very well too.
The only bullet I've been wary of was some 224 RWS 74gr SP cone points, these were startlingly accurate on paper, but I came to think they were too robust, and went straight through the deer without knocking it down.

These two were shot with plenty of backstop out in the back of beyond in actual fact but i have to agree with you there. I shot another more recently in the same location and --yep you guessed it---right thru. So you are 100% correct i will also never rely on them breaking up as that last round did not.

Wasn’t questioning your backstop choices.

I also agree that a frangible bullet gives an added layer of safety on stones ground, it’s just not one that can be relied upon.
