We had about two acres planted after clear fell. The saplings were weevil infested and died, the weevils didn’t affect and of the plants around the saplings. I would therefore not suggest this is weevil damage.

The moths that have hatched out in my van don't resemble the description, about 12mm head to tail and chocolate brown.

That's been intentionally sprayed with glyphosate. Who would benefit from the trees being killed off? Because they've clearly targeted them. Glyphosate is cheap & unfortunately easy to buy.

Fraying damage by deer, over in Baltimore (aka Blat ‘em more), according to a local forester….



My money would be on either weevil damage ( the percentage is too high to realistically be herbicide unless it was deliberate, ie vandalism), or less likely but possible a diseased batch of plants (this happens sometimes, including here): the problem can be identified and thereafter acted upon, but there’s a world of difference between deer and sheep damage, let alone weevil and some pathogen impacting on the plant batch, and merely guessing or attributing it to the catch-all ‘deer damage’ is akin to blaming man made carbon dioxide for climate change - telling…

The way the immediate grass is dead, but surrounding vegetation isn't, suggesting to me it was targeted... Some thickos out there, he might have thought it's a weed!

Well yes but we can also think that some things are highly susceptible to glyphosate. Grape vines especially, perhaps the trees could be also.
