DSC1 Question bank question

Hello all,
Just a quick question about how you would interpret the following question at the back of the DSC1 training book

"23. If you suspect you have wounded a deer and it has disappeared from sight, what should you do?
A) wait 10 mins...
B) wait 1 minute...
C) go straight where you last saw it
D) go round back..."

I'd rule out B & D right off the bat but I'm not sure if its just me but it feels like quite an open question?

No mention of where you suspect the shot landed, no mention of the reaction observed....

A wounded deer could be a shot in the leg or non lethal head shot in which case it says you should follow up immediately

However a heart and lung shot says to wait 10 minutes - is a heart and lung shot where the deer moves out of sight not considered a wounded deer?

There isn't an option for 30+ minutes so based on the table on page 317 I'm assuming not a gut shot

Apologies if it is a silly question - been a long day!
I think I read another thread that there aren't answers to these questions available to check against and ask answers should be in the book - is this the case?

Many thanks

Recently did my dsc , a lot of the questions in there you can answer with common sense , some you need to study for , with this it’s had wait a certain time go to where it was when you shot ( A )
Not a silly question best way I found to learn …… ask

Sorry didn’t read your last bit , no they don’t put the answers in with the question bank , was told it was to stop people reading the questions and answers section to memorise them within reading the manual and learning it properly

Many thanks, and yes, it makes sense not having the answers available as you described - I'm sure there will be a few more questions I will be asking but it's a fascinating read so far!

Enjoy it , if you give yourself time to read through it and check answers etc and not rush it then you will be fine
I enjoyed the reading and the course , the actual test was bit odd hadn’t had yo do anything like that since school !
Passed 4 out of ghdd ed 5 sections , failed the deer I d part , retook that bit and passed

I think the thing that threw me off was how would I know from reading it where the deer was wounded?
From the stalks I have been on we always wait at least 10 minutes so far so re-reading it it does seem the sensible choice

Thank you all for your help 🙏

It’s A, good luck on your DSC 1 👌 I found that there was some that my head just wouldn’t accept as the right answer, but as said above most are common sense.

Try using the dsctraining .org app. You can go through the question bank & it gives you the correct answers afterwards. All for £8 a month. Worth its weight in gold.

As a rule wait about 10 minutes. That's the answer to the question.

However, in real life, much depends on the time of day, where you have hit the deer, and what species. For instance, hitting a Sika stag in the lower leg or stomach, late in the evening, you will be lucky to catch up with it, and a dog will be required. But as I said the answer is A for the benefit of the exam.

Thanks for all the comments, I forgot to update this post to say that I passed my DSC1 first time back in September - Found the question part fine (definitely think reading the manual combined with dsctraining .org was a great mix for building knowledge and confidence)

The only 'issue' was the shooting test
......

I had not long received my FAC and only had my Sako for about a week or two prior to the DSC1 course. In that time I only had one zeroing session but decided to use it for the test.
First two shots at 100 prone on the zeroing target and they were both next to each other about 7 or 8 inches low!

Made a few click adjustments, two more shots and couldn't see the holes... Feeling flustered now but asked Chris the instructor if he could see where they went and thankfully they were bang on the bull (couldn't see them through the fixed 8 power scope)

Feeling depleted of some confidence now after watching the two people ahead of me just fail theirs, I proceeded with the test.
Two shots from 100m prone and both felt good (couldn't see where they went but happy)

Move up to 75m of sticks... Two shots which again felt good....

Walking up to the final position and I could see two holes outside the faint white ring - almost in the neck area!
Blugh - a wave of sickness feeling came over me "what's the point in doing the final two shots if I have already failed" going through my mind - I said to Chris and no response, just a smile and silent chuckle

I proceeded with the final position - 10m or so from sticks & both right where I wanted them but still a feeling of dread!

As I walk up to the target, I started counting the holes and there were 6 or 7 in the torso area of the deer! Turns out the person next to me was shooting my target and Chris was aware (hence his chuckles)

The four shots I did from the 100m and 75m were all within an inch and I can't even explain the weird feeling being told I had passed after convincing myself that I hadn't!

Sorry, another question on this set.
I’ve been through the first set and there is no question on either the open or closed seasons for deer. I would have thought that this would almost certainly be included within the assessment.
Do they ask you this on the assessment day?

If you sign up to the online tool then this does give you the correct answer iirc.

They will ask a bunch of questions covering identification, safe shoring, diseases, gralloching and safe handling, calibres and seasons. It’s pot luck what they ask.

When I did mine, there was a bunch of farmed reds right next to the building I was in and I could see them, so the id questions in reds were a doddle!!

I was told by my trainer that season dates have been taken out of the test so there won't be any questions on it.

To be fair it is a bit pointless as it takes seconds to find it on your phone.

I did my dsc1 in I think march this year
You might get a few questions on which organisation provides up to date deer seasons. The answers are pretty obvious.

I had no questions on dates

it was not covered during the training session beyond knowing the answer to the "where would you go to find out the season for XXX in England/Wales/Scotland etc"

Trainer gave Strong implications that the actual dates were not required

Im not saying for sure you don't need to know them since it is part of the syllabus but you have some pretty strong indicators

even though it's not that hard to know them anyway
