Import duties from Germany

Can anyone advise please?
If for example I were to place an order to a company in Germany, for arguments sake converted euros to GBP of £1000 and the company included all taxes/shipping their end to me, would it be VAT 20% import duty?
So £1200 total?
Or are there any other charges?
Thanks

You'll get charged a percentage of your £1000 in duty, you'll need to find out what that percentage is depending upon what the goods are as they are all different, then your 20% VAT on top of that.

So £1000 + duty % + 20%.
And you may also get charged storage fees by UK customs if whoever filed in the customs declaration used the wrong colour ink and it gets put in the do it tomorrow pile and is there for six months.

Don’t forget the Brexiteers view that this is democracy at work.

Sadly true, it has never happened to me yet though so fingers crossed.

so the duty% is a commodity rate?
Nope it’s not duty or tariff's, its custom fees that are not necessarily there on the value of the goods but on the consignment. So you pay the same amount whether its a small parcel or a large truck.

You may also quickly start banging your head against a wall (less painful) and use a customs agent, who is somebody who knows what coloured pens to use this week and the size of the block numerals to fill in the numbers, and agents of course charge a fee.

Or put it another way. A good friend has done a lot of trade throughout Africa, China and the EU moving FMCG type goods. Now that UK is no longer part of the EU he no longer does stuff with UK as the embuggerance of UK customs just is too much.

Just been stung £464 in duties by FedEx for some free samples from Sweden about to be blown up in a trial. On the invoice they were valued at 2000 kr (about £193). Items needed urgently so paid but now a week later having finally got an actual invoice I’m about to challenge what they have charge because it’s certainly not 20% VAT. £12.85 admin charge too!

That's got nothing to do with Brexit, customs have always been a complete pain in the arse when importing things, and an incompetent pain in the arse at that.

I used to buy external electric wall boxes from Germany allways was £57 per box delivered to me before brexit now its a £12 letter telling me import duty then £11.40 duty so a total of £80.40 all that has happened is the government are not paying into the EU but we the consumer are paying the price now !!!!!!

Currently 4 weeks into a custom’s clearance of a Brownells shipment from their European warehouse. Totally out of Brownells hands but it’s f***king ANNOYING🤬🤬🤬

But before Brexit, there was no need for any goods going to abd from Europe to go anywhere near customs, so none of this embuggerance.

Of course those in favour of Brexit cannot see this, nor understand the level of additional embuggerance and cost that has imposed on all UK business and people.

Hopefully the new UK government will get around sorting out the mess and removing the totally unnecessary levels of bureaucracy that is utterly killing the UK economy.

I went to pick up a package from Bristol airport years ago and naively thought it would be a simple matter of paying the import fees. :)
Oh no, we can't tell you how much duty to pay, you have to have a copy of the tarrif and submit the paper work, then we will either accept it and release the goods or we will reject the application and you will have to have another guess.
The alternative was to negotiate a fee with an import agent who would continue to submit applications until an acceptable bid is made. They will then deliver it direct to my door. They did this for £15 which was less than the cost of the fuel to drive to the airport and back. They admitted that it was a totally ludicrous situation with HMCR and nothing but a game.

Isn't the 20% VAT also on the cost of the shipping too?

This is what puts me off buying from America, the postage charges are usually the same if not more than the item and barely ever below $90 and then they get hit with another 20% on top🤦🏻‍♂️

Thanks for all the replies, just found out the commodity code is zero for my item, but of course 20% vat
Reading the issues others have had I think I'll pass

I remember years ago I ordered a lot of fishing kit from the far east, it was 3.9% commodity and then 20% vat on top.....but I still made a good profit

Cheers

Richard

No no no, it's our own civil service stubbornly refusing to let go of the powers that the unelected EU commission gave to them, eg that's why EU REACH was merely retitled UK REACH instead of abolished as it should have been!
