.25-06 bullet choice

Ive just got my licence back after renewal with a slot for a 25-06. I’m getting a factory R8 barrel (some more are available from a shop in Cambridgeshire I believe). I bought this to use the 101LRX really, for small/medium deer and general use. The Barnes are over £1 a bullet and not something I want to practice with, so I’d like some other premium recommendations in case the LRX shoots poorly. And also what good more economical lead bullets would people recommend? I’m thinking one of the Speer 120/Sierra 117 BTSP? The Nosler 115 BT maybe? And the 110 AB as the expensive option.

Sierra Pro-hunter 117gr (#1640) shot well out of my 1:10, 25-06 and they are only £29/100 ?
What sort of bullets cost £1 each ?

The Sierra Gameking 100gr (#1625) were better (and slightly cheaper @£27/100), I think the 117gr was reaching the limit with my twist and it's these (100gr) bullets I reload with these days.
I don't push them too fast. just under 3000fps seems to work best.

Thanks Miki.

I missed the 117 pro hunter from the short list, I’ve read good reports. When you say they seem to work best at around 3000fps is that accuracy or terminal performance?

The Barnes bullets cost over £1 unfortunately.

Thanks,

Josh

I found heavier bullets don't work well in my rifle so I use 110gn Accubond & Sierra Pro-Hunter 100gn bullets. Barrel is 22" so approx 28500fps with 110gn AB's & 3100fps with Sierra 100gn
Bullets cost what they cost but Sierra do present more reasonable value & are great on hinds. I always use the AB's on stags.

I have used a 25.06 for many years. Much underated calibre in my opinion. I have used it over many years on hind culling in the highlands. Good 100g bullet, shoots flat.

Thanks Miki.

3000fps is the MV (muzzel Velocity).
The 100gr Gameking can be loaded up to 3200+ fps but I found the bullet wandered a little at that speed and i'm not shooting over more than 200/300yds.

Have a look @ Mcleods of Tain.
They sell Barnes Bullets and are between 51 and 62p each - sounds like someone is ripping you off, there is no way a bullet should cost more than £1, that's crazy.

Barnes Bullets

when i had a 25-06 used various but nothing came close to 100gn swift scirrocos bit pricey but really good terminal performance

p.s the best very best bullet is not much good in the wrong place

They’re around £60 for a box of 50 at McLeods….

Aha, things are clearer now.
You are talking abour 'rounds of ammunition' (ready rolled) rather than bullets, which pretty much everyone else is talking about.

The 'bullet' is the projectile that is pushed out the barrel by the expanding gasses created when the powder/charge burns.

If you use the proper nouns you will get much clearer answers.

Bullet choice and rounds of ammunition choice is different.

No I’m talking about bullets…. 🤷‍♂️

I've been incredibly impressed with the .257 Yew Tree bullet that Richard developed. He wasn't going to bother due to lack of demand but myself and a few others twisted his arm. He's done a fantastic job of it and it's nice to support a UK manufacturer. No supply chain issues here, and everything I've shot with it has dropped quickly with very sensible levels of carcass damage. I used to use the 101gr LRX but find these more consistent both in terms of expansion and accuracy from my rifle.

According to an email I received from Sierra Bullets they no longer manufacture the 25 cal 100 gr or 117 gr Pro-Hunter projectiles.
The 100 gr Gameking has been very effective in the three 25-06 rifles and the 250 Sav AI rifle that my wife and I own.
