Using the 'Ignore" button...

Having reflected on a few posts this year, I have filtered out people who have annoyed me, by judicious and liberal use of the "Ignore" button.

The down-side to this, is that I can now only read what "Derek" from Pocklington in North Yorkshire posts; (and he only wants to sell 'twice-fired' brass in .223).

Have I overdone it?




The irony that none of you can read this, because you yourselves are "ignoring" me, is not entirely lost on me...

OK I have temporarily 'un-ignored' you, so I can respond...

I do not have an issue with opposing views - it is what makes the world go around.

However.

If this was 'real life' and I was a regular at the "SD Arms" Pub, and there was always the same bloke in the corner, picking a fight with the bar staff, slagging off the other customers 'ad nausea', and just being (for me) unpleasant - then I would not sit at their table and I would not engage with them.

Still like going to the "SD Arms", just do not want to drink with that bloke.

Christ, I hope I am not 'that bloke'...

Interesting pub analogy, but I do think that there is a danger over only reading similar views and never being challenged. Conversely I have rather dropped out of Pigeon Watch because it had become a circular conversation. Perhaps not engaging with trouble makers and loud mouths is better than ignore buttoning them?

I do agree and certainly don't want to spend time in an echo chamber. The main issue I see is that there are those who are willing to have their opinions changed by listening and engaging with others. None of my opinions or beliefs are set in stone, they are constantly evolving as new information comes to light.

The problem is there are a number of very vocal people on who here who are given a mouthpiece to say what they want with zero comebacks and they have no desire or ability to realise there opinion or perception of the world is likely different to another's. I personally don't need to keep being "challenged" by reading the same comments about using immigrants as target practice or hoping they drown while crossing the channel to know that sort of person isnt going to be offering up thought provoking conversation to help me expand my world view and become a more well rounded individual.

In a similar vein to the pub analogy, I know these people exist and hold these views, and I know the impact it can have and understand why they think that but I fundamentally disagree and don't want to spend my free time engaging with them. I'm not pretending it doesn't exist, just choosing to not let it in.

Maybe the most prolific ignored members would modify their behaviour if the ignore button was more akin to other social media. When you ignore or block someone they also can't see any of your posts so they'd be limited on who they can interact with.

The difference in pub environment is that a certain look on one's face can be enough to let said bloke know that he is a dik and needs to pipe down failing that there is usually an honorable rogue lurking about who is all to happy to physically end the disrespectful behaviour.
I don't use ignore button at all just scroll pass and live and let live

On topic, I've no-one on my ignore list. Being annoying or offensive does not in my experience necessarily preclude people from being knowledgeable and/or helpful - and since to benefit from people's posts on a forum it is not necessary to engage with them in any way it would seem pointless deliberately to abdicate the ability to read anyone's posts.

A secondary reason not to use this function might be because part of the point of ignoring people ('cutting' them) in society is to make your disapproval clear to them - yet in this case, it seems the 'cut' person is unaware of the use of the ignore button. At least, I assume this: for I am not aware of anyone having used it on me.
