Have used a variety of Panasonic Lumix compact cameras through the years and the one i have the now is playing up so looking at what folk would say is the best out there in this price range now.
Don't really treat them as good as they should be so hopefully something durable, foolproof but with very good features.
Thanks.

Are there any particular capabilities you are looking for?

TBH unless I am going out purposefully to take photos then these days I mostly just carry my iPhone.

I do have several compact cameras (also mostly Panasonic Lumix coincidentally) but the old saying "the best camera is the one you that's with you" definitely holds true, and unless you are planning to make prints then an iPhone or equivalent Android phone is pretty hard to beat, particularly given the range of built-in editing effects they come with these days.

Just some examples from my iPhone 13 (no guesses for identifying that I do prefer Black & White!):

Excellent pics,especially for a phone.

Ideal capabilities are a very good zoom as a lot is done at a fair distance and also low light capabilities as again first and last light is my most productive time.

I've not used them, but bridge cameras like the Panasonic DC/DMC series seem to get good reviews, and have large zoom ranges. The Sony RX100 is also highly regarded, though the zoom range is smaller.

The challenge with compacts is that you end up trading zoom range, sensor size and image noise.

Good luck with your search Sako. I have a Panasonic LX100, I swear there is magic in a camera that has good fast Leica glass in front. I hate menus & scrolling around, this one is just like a film camera. Like you I look for an alternative when it packs up, & they all seem to eventually.

Thanks again for that.
Actually just ordered a Sony Cybershot.HX 90 last night before reading this so hopefully that's a decent choice.

Will have a look at the LX100.
I go through way too cameras and will start to be a wee bit more careful with them.

I have two Panasonic LUMIX which I still use as a low key carry. However, I recently bought a Nikon P950. I always used Nikon when I was doing semi pro work and still use a Fuji S5Pro (uses all my old and new Nikkor lenses) an oldie but a goody, because the CCD gives me the colour rendition for the work I need. I have been very impressed by the P950 resolution and contrast are v good the big thing with this camera is the built in zoom which gives an optical+digital zoom of 2000mm if needed. I nearly always buy my cameras second hand and I am patient to wait for the right one, non pro owned, low shutter count and good body condition. The P950 cost me just short of £500 compared to £750-800 new.
