PSA!

I'm lucky!
By pure coincidence a check up blood test coincided with a virus infection that sent my PSA level off the scale with at the time painful uncomfortable symptoms.
That put me immediately on the cancer treatment pathway.
A month of agonizing waiting for another blood test to allow the virus to subside has just been conducted and my PSA level is now normal, thank God.
My wife was in tears when I told her.
She asked if they gave a reason, being cheeky I told her that the nurse asked if my partner spends excessive time on her phone of an evening I said yes, yes she does! I won't repeat her reply.....
Fellers get a blood test, I need all the ears I can get to bitch and moan to so can't lose any of you!

Glad to hear the test result came back normal. :thumb:

Some may not be aware that the threshold for what is “normal” changes over time, see the table below. Also a heightened PSA score can be a sign of an enlarged prostate, which can be checked via examination during biopsy, so a slightly higher score may not be a problem, but needs to looked at in context.

Also be aware that there are several factors that can influence the PSA score, and so therefore should be avoided for the 48 hours before having a PSA test. These vigorous exercise, sexual activity leading to ejaculation (should you be so lucky!), and some medications such as statins and ibuprofen.

Great news !!
I asked for the blood test a couple of months ago whilst taking blood for diabetes test and my request was refused!
Have another blood test next week and will try again !

Our local lions do a PSA test session every year, I’ve had good results from them but a friend had a bad result and his doctor was sceptical of the test session but did more test after his results, fortunately after extra tests he’s now getting the treatment he needs.
It’s a lifesaver get tested please.

That is a strange descision from your surgery, given your age :-|

Brilliant news Smelly - and a relief for you and your nearest and dearest and of course the good lady!
A bit of a segue but on the theme of getting checked I just received the all-clear result of my routine poop screening so happy bunny too.
We now live in times where such “fore and aft” checking is easily accessible - it would be utter madness not to use it….

GP’s often decline a PSA trest even though its cheep it comes off their bottom line. Remember GP’s are private monopoly contractors to the NHS not part of it.

Insist on the test , I did , PSA 30, then a biopsy and scans, Gleeson score of 9 ( 10 is pretty much curtains) . Full open prostate and lymph node removal. I had no symptoms so if I had not insisted on the test 5 years ago I would probably not be typing this now.

GET TESTED FFS !

3ish years ago l scored 93.
Yes it was prostate cancer
6 doses of chemo, 6 of radio and regular hormone injections and my PSA is not detectable.
Get tested as a routine or as soon as you notice any changes to urination !

Lot of research on whether testing without symptoms works.
The PSA test is a very poor predictor of prostate cancer so you need to think very carefully before you get tested.

Of those with a high PSA 75% will NOT have cancer and 15% with a normal PSA WILL have cancer.

Getting tested can cause significant anxiety and you need to be ready for this.

Certainly if you have obstructed symptoms then you must get tested. By this I mean getting up more than two times at night or not being able to hit a wall 2 feet away🤭

Just been through it myself and all clear but it is not just having a blood test there is more to it than that.

Better to be tested and get checked out from a false result than not be tested and it's too late when it is found.
Am waiting for my results to come through. Not had any issues but also not wanting to risk it!!

Sort of but as a consequence of “random” testing many people are getting quite aggressive treatment leaving them with major side effects (10% incontinence) and no evidence of improvement in survival figures.

It is a personal choice and I’m not suggesting don’t do it but just saying realise the rabbit hole you may be about to go down.

First step is the test. If that throws up any issues then I will push for an mri, not a biopsy and take it from there.

Current policy is that you go to MRI after two high test results as it cuts out unnecessary biopsies.
The issue comes with the histology result and Gleason score.

Hopefully it won’t come to that, although my GWP just decided to try and run between my legs with me facing away from him and my nuts are somewhere near my ears now! 🤢

You ****ed him off also then.....
Ha! No. He is a big softie and was being silly because two of ours are in season at the mo so he is feeling a bit out of sorts as two little cockapoos wave their back ends in his face (he has been neutered so is pretty relaxed around them).
