Deer poaching in Devon ...

What is the basis of the belief that poaching is involved? Maybe I have missed the point, but none of what was reported is indicative of illegal activity. Is this just Polyfilla after a quiet day at Plod Central? Being seen in an area where lions are located (London Zoo) does not make anyone a big game hunter, as far as I am aware.

Knee jerk reaction.
That particular force can't do their job properly as it is.

I love how they jump straight to "seize firearms, dogs, vehicles and equipment"

They do nothing for rural crime like agri theft and hare coursing, but they've all of a sudden got the resources to catch some "poachers".

Given the pitiful price of venison I thought poaching was fairly low in most of the country?
Twice in recent years we've found upwards of half a dozen carcasses down a public bridlepath. Not an ounce of meat harvested, odd one. First time they rotted. Second time the council actually came and removed them.

I listened to quite an interesting podcast the other day that interviewed a US Fish and Wildlife Cop. Most of the poaching cases he talked about were either people who just did it for the 'thrill', or in one case, a guy who lamped an outstanding buck with a rifle out of season and then entered the head in an archery hunting competition with a big prize. ($8k I think)

I guess poaching for meat is inevitably harder to detect because the evidence tends to be eaten!

The illegal poaching of deer has been going on here for years. It's high time something was done about it. Deer are mainly shot from the road, and there are many areas where this is possible.
Not only is this illegal, but it is also highly dangerous for those who are on the land. I've personally had a couple of near squeaks when out after foxes at night. Not a pleasant experience!

Where we have had instances of poaching, it is the "country cousins" for the thrill, using anything from long dogs to vehicles and cross bows. The others doing it are probably members of our own community, which seems insane, when you consider the potential penalties.

Could well be the farmers are reporting unauthorised shooting on their land or neighbours land they know about? I've had to deal with pheasant poaching on my land and know no one has permission on my neighbours field for example.

I'm aware of one local person who has been convicted of poaching deer, also had reports of sheep being shot with a cross bow and seen other activity.

The rural crime officer I've talked too also seemed helpful.

Damned if they do Damned if they don’t.At least they are willing to go out.

I get a laugh from you guys in the UK blaming Gypsy’s. We do the same in Canada blaming Indians (natives) lol

Its certainly not just gypsys, or all gypsys for that matter.

The correlation between various groups of humans and crimes can be quite an eye opener. So much so many forces and governments have often choosen not to gather certain details of offenders to make drawing such obvious statistical conclusions more difficult.

Plenty of whinging that Police never show up in the countryside, don’t respond to any countryside incidents etc.

Then plenty of whining when there is respond of them actually responding to and taking seriously reports of poaching and unauthorised use of firearms on land where the users have no lawful authority to be.

Can’t win.
