Handing gun in to police

I just surrendered an old shotgun, I was told in no uncertain terms DO NOT cut the weapon up before taking it to the Police Station.

I was also told that, after I cut up a shotgun. I understand it is allowed but your force may not like it, I kept all the parts and ensured the serial number was still visible. I thought you couldn't do it to a firearm but not checked.

I followed this advice: Can you legally destroy a shotgun?

But, my FEO said I could hand any guns direct to him, so I'll do that if I need to in future.

I seem to recall a recent post on here where an FEO (in Scotland I think)had been keeping firearms handed to him for destruction, from memory he failed to record having taken possession when he returned to the office….

Yes, when the raided his house they also found Det cord, he did 4 years in Leeds Jail

I was speaking to an old mate on Saturday. He took six shotguns into his local gunshop / rfd to sell them. The owner said ill take them off your hands for £50.00 each . My mate said that he was hoping to get a bit more than that for them , as they're all tidy guns . The rfd explained that my mate has misunderstood, and that he'd be charging my mate £50.00 per gun , to take them from him.

For many the value of a “tidy gun” is far much higher in their minds than what they are actually worth in market. Gun dealers have racks full of “tidy“ guns that just sit there for years clogging up space. Eventually the dealer will incur the cost and embuggerance of having to send them to an auction or disposal.

Unless a gun is of a high grade when new, is in very good tidy condition, has not been significantly altered, customised etc and is of a cartridge that is in vogue and for which ammo is readily available the market for used guns really is pretty soft.

I'm fully aware of the sorry state of the gun market at the moment, but my mate wasn't. My advice was to offer them for free on here or pigeonwatch , and save himself £300.00.

Have a damaged and worthless gun I want taken off my hands and off my ticket and all the RFDs in my area charge (~£25) for taking a gun in.

I was wondering if handing it in to the police would be a way of getting it off ticket for free?

Has anyone done this before?

Do they issue a receipt / write it on the FAC under the sold table?

I would be intending to apply for a one for one variation to use the slot for a new rifle
I’ve done this twice with shotguns. No issues.
