7.62x39

Stupid question but I’m looking to reload 7.62x39 (for an AK) and I’m not 100% sure what heads to use.

Are they 30cal the same as my 308 or should I be looking for something specific?

They are Soviet continuation of the old Czarist .30 from the days of the Mosin-Nagant rifle. So in fact .311 or thereabouts and the same as our .303 bullets.

Much appreciated. Glad I checked

Use either .308, .310, or .311. ALL dies should be small based for self loaders dur to the nature of the cartridge. What are you loading for? I have Kar 47 by Rock River, an Odin 8.5 " pistol and a Century BF47 in self loaders. -Muir

UK. So, will be a straight pull.

If straight pull I'd very much look to small base dies as there will be no gas assistance just Mk1 arm power! Very sound counsel from MUIR.

Regarding MUIR and his advice the only caveat would be if your chosen dies size the neck of the case enough to be absolutely tight and secure enough to grip a bullet of .308" diameter.

So if you can beg, borrow or steal a bullet of .308" to see if that is so. I know that Lee .303 British dies for example do not resize cases enough to hold a .308" bullet. I found that out wanting to make .303 British dummy rounds for key rings with then more available surplus 7.62 x 51 bullets. So if using Lee 7.62 x 39 dies I'd check if that is or isn't the case with those.

But if you chosen dies do correctly grip such then you have the ability to bespoke match bullets to bore and if you can use a lead ball such as a buckshot or cap and ball bullet to slug the bore and match that diameter be it .308", .310", .311" or whatever. Military rifles used to be fairly liberal in bore diameter as of course the broach would be made to give as many uses as possible so allowed bore tolerances were often generous.

RCBS and Hornady both come with a.308 expander. Good point. -Muir

The 7.62 x39 is a very accurate round. Back in the day i built two bench rest guns in this chambering. Both held their own. My CZ American 21" will shoot cloverleafs at 100m using Hornady 123 grain over Accurate Arms 1680 and i have killed deer with this load through my 18" CZ suppressor cut rifle. At 200 m it drops about 7" so its easy to hold on the back of deer and squeeze. I watched a friend drop a whitetail buck using Wolf (Russian) steel cased, steel jacketed, 122 grain hp and the same guy dropped a big mulie doe using a ballistic tip Nosler at 80 yards.
My Rugers are used exclusively with steel bulleted and cased ammo. Even poor quality ammo will stay under. 2.5 moa: Good quality Russian will stay under 1.5 moa.-Muir

Hmmm.
Unlikely but if they are anything like their comrade Mosin Nagants they will come in anywhere between .308 and .314….

Yup. I have shot many cast bullets and the bores o. f Nagants can run large but ive never seen one bigger than .312"-Muir

I’ve got one of these CZs I just shoot 303 heads through mine
123s and 215s loves em both no issues with the lee dies I’ve never tried any 308 heads not seen the point to be honest
Great little fun round to play with especially with the subs

Always puzzled me how the “smaller” .308 bullet is actually smalle.than the (.311) .303…..
