Caught Today

Had to take couple days off work as my lad isn't well and I stay in hospital with him.

Brought trap home into garden & my eldest keeping eye on them. Never see magpies here; got one of the pair and other 'dancing' around trap apparently!

Just had an add up

Mainly caught crows - 65
Magpie 20
1 jackdaw

Foxes shot 22
Squirrels shot 41
rats shot 189
1 jay

Effort this year greater and numbers are down which shows it must be working

Also seen my first brood of pheasants and now must have well over 100 ducklings
Saw 2 pairs of grey partridge this morning on same field , hope they get coveys away.

It was a while ago but a very large boar badger in a snare - I think it is now called “bycatch” but never have I seen such devastation over the radius of the snare - like Hiroshima and Chernobyl melded into one. The old boy was not happy when I approached indeed in truth neither was your hero - so I was very grateful for an old tip to always take a yard square sheet of plywood with a 6 inch slit on one edge, then catch the snare in the slit and walk into said slightly miffed badger. Note - make sure you keep the ply tight to the ground; it is also particularly helpful if Brock is the other side of the sheet. Then simply cut the wire tight against the sheet, the snare falls off and the oul fella runs off - most of the time….
Do you know how to do an impression of a Matador with 9 square feet of ply? Ol Foxyboy does…..
