Schmidt Bender Pricing

You talk 💩 their all cheap chinky made 💩
Maybe so but I am also talking experience.
Almost all the rifle shooters that I know ,and that is quite a few, have moved on to digital and non of them have gone back.
Have a look at the you tube videos for even the C50 and they have moved on a bit from there.
A dealer told me that he has glass cabinets full of super expensive glass scopes but young people coming into stalking prefer digital. Why, because it is better.

That’s the problem - YouTube!

I’ve seen so many loose their way just by getting sucked in by all the crap 💩 posted on YouTube!

YouTube is designed to flog you crap you don’t need and your all getting sucked in by it 😂😂😂😂

Digital is NOT better at all, it just makes you lazy and it’s easier, I can function very effectively with just binos and a glass scope, can you?

Over the years I’ve learned but cheap buy twice!

That’s why I have

Leica binoculars - had them nearly 20 years!
Schmidt Bender scope - had S&B 18 years.

Also, I will say over those years. I’ve only had two brands of rifle and that is Ruger and tikka.

Spend the money buy what lasts otherwise you’re just gonna end up wasting money like water out of a bucket with a hole in!

The modern day rifle scope has too much crap. You don’t need to fiddle with as long as it’s got the relevant adjustment knobs and a cross hair, that’s all you need. Anything else is really not required if you know what you’re doing.

If you have to rely and need the use of BC turrets you’re shooting too far at live quarry and then there’s a certain degree of animal welfare that comes into play regardless if it’s a fox/rabbit/Deer.

In the end the arse will fall out of the digital market, when they start going wrong, and then there’s an upgrade upon upgrade upon upgrade a new brand upon new brand upon new brand and everyone will watch YouTube and get sucked in and then then up spending more money on crap they don’t need, and then there will be the likes of me, still stalking deer effectively and efficiently and we won’t have wasted the money because I invested correctly in the beginning!

Fair enough with optical scopes. Suppuse every hunter has one or two. But what do you do with night active animals. Only way, apart from beaten drives, to get at wild boar is night shooting. Then thermal is the only way. Also, more and more night shooting of fallow deer because people have scared them off with daytime shooting from high stands.
Also, a digital or thermal is just plain fun. Man is an inventive creature and move borders.

It’s not plain fun it’s blatant disregard and disregard for the quarry nothing more nothing less.

Why, if you use a digital scope thats as predicatbale and repeatable as any traditional optical scope then how is that blatant disregard for the quarry? For night time use not much beats a good thermal scope.

I’m a firm traditionalist and unless you are being paid as in contractor where it is a part of your living to kill deer, thermal and digital scopes are just a desperation tool to squeeze the trigger.

I know one or 2 that have nv/thermal for mr fox but most lads that I know go lamp/lamp or handheld/lamp for fox, hasn't stopped them dropping foxes. Just to say id have a thermal scope for fox rifle IF it wasnt licenced as a firearm. I can see the attraction of digital to younger lads in the UK starting out given the current price difference.

Although in saying that if I was in the UK and looking for an optic, for stalking I prefer glass and Id go secondhand.

I wouldnt say digital is better than glass or vice versa, I would say they bought have a use case, but I wouldnt use digital for deer myself.

4x32, 6x42, 3-9x36, 4-12x42, 7x50 or 8x56 in swaro or Schmidt or old Zeiss quality are about the only hunting scopes the world should ever need IMHO - apart from DG and driven of course

Amen 🙏 that post there is gospel

Ill do the above 6 quotes together as there is a lot of overlap.

I would definitely be in the "buy once cry once" camp in so far as I go by, "buy the best gear that your wallet can afford"

I would disagree that you dont need "fiddly bits" like bdc or parralax, I think it all depends on how and where you stalk deer.

Me personally, my ground consists of farmland and open hill(mountain), a 7.5x50 or 8x56 would serve me well on the farmland, I certainly wouldnt be lacking. However on the hill a fixed optic would save me weight and cost me deer.

I wont get into what is and isnt ethical as far as distnaces because, to me, everyones ethical limit, determined by skill, conditions and equipment varies.

What I can say is only using fixed power optics or an optics sans bdc/parrallax, tbh I could live without illum, would limit my ability on the mountain.

It’s wouldn’t cost you deer at all, if you know what you doing!
?
Shot many a deer at over 300 zeroed 1” high @100 if your shooting beyond that your playing sniper not stalker

How long have you been stalking?

Thats fair enough, Ive shot plenty of deer using mpbr myself on with a variable optic. And where Ive needed to Ive used the features and capabilities of my setup

Hunting/shooting 20 years, stalking 10 👍
You?
Add 15 to your 10 and that’s where I am stalking wise, my experience says if you need all the bells and whistles that you say you need you will be shooting beyond 300 therefore you are at greater risk of wounding!

I’ve also been a tracker who have spent many a year following wounded Deer with a dog I’ve been seen and heard it all!

Unless of course there are bull elk now in Ireland where you have a 3‘ x 3‘ chest aim at which I don’t think you have so really to be brutally honest you do what you like. You wanna pay all the extra money for all the extra bells and whistles that are not needed up to you but that’s not going guarantee accuracy on a living animal at range.

Thats a lot of experience, when you say 300, are we talking yards or meters?
I have and do, again when conditions allow, take shots beyond 300m.
Now do I do it regularly no, I try and stalk in as close as I can.
In farmland, I have my scope on 6x/8x, parralax set at 100 and my zero at my mpbr.
On the hill I start exactly the same, and then adjust accordinly depending on the shot presented and the conditions.

I would take it that everyone who stalks, whether through inexperience, starting out, or complacency, as they gain experience, has taken a bad shot, or not recovered an animal, and I wouldnt believe anyone who says they have had a 100% kill/recovery.

I appreciate that, unfortunately the great irish elk is long since extinct, and Red is the biggest species we have. Again I would say what is and isn't needed is down to how and where you stalk or if you're involved in culling.
If all my ground were farmland, with lanes and known distance fields all id need is a rifle, fixed scope, mod, sticks, binos and a knife.

I rationalise all my gear at the end of every season, and I sell what Ive bought and maybe not used or needed.

I like the gear and equipment side of stalking just as much as a like stalking, does that result in wasted purchases sure, it did at the start, Ive refined it now to where Im really only replacing if stuff wears out or if I can afford better than I could at the time I bought something
