How many stalks to achieve three completed ICR's for the DSC2?

It all depends on the ground you have. Some people may stalk in a syndicate and shoot a total of 5 deer per year, some may shoot 5+ per trip. If i was in a syndicate and was taking 5 per year then i would look at the guided route. If you have the ground withg deer and know it well it shouldnt take that many, lets say 5-6 to get fully written up. Good luck.
All the best 1995rs

Best I've witnessed was all 3 stalks in one morning - and I shot another deer myself! It's a bit of a lottery really, and so it should be as that is deer stalking!
I hate the fact that some deer parks guarantee DSC 2 as it can give element 1 (stalk deer) no credibility. They are not all like that thankfully.
Not all AW's charge fees either! If you have your own ground, I don't charge, other than any expenses I might incur such as fuel to get to you.
Shop around!;)

Record holder?

Well I was just wondering how long everybody else spent on their L1 / L2's?..... I have the old fourth edition tacked onto an edition six, as supporting evidence, it's dated 2005, That'll be seven + years time elapsed since registering for the L2, having it run out of time & getting it re registered & starting work on it again, just about to put it in this next week, cost would be circa £2000 after digs fuel etc.

The quickest I know of is a guy in Dorset who completed his 3 ICR's the day before he passed his DSC1

Mine took 4 or five outings with a bit taken from here and a bit from there, Its a funny thing that when you start there seems so much to do and prepare for, all my outings were witnessed on the ground I cover so I was out well In advance, counting, watching, evenings and mornings...Then arranging times meeting places etc...Fotunately my AW was as good as gold, very flexible and patient, didnt mind getting wet...looking back It seems easy, but when I was In the middle of It all with all the possible questions that may come at me It was a bit consuming....Well worth the effort though...i could do with another to go at now though...Cheers

Next we hear of a candidate who shot three deer with one shot, one bullet, all head shots, using his own rifle and before he had had applied for a FAC and before he had collected the rifle from the shop ;)

Took me about about a dozen outings. 3 different AW's in three different environments. Open hill, forestry and arable. Nearly booked to go somewhere at the beginning of this year where I was garenteed 3 deer but never did and I'm glad I never. Feels better doing it the way I did.

Matt.

Like 6.5/284matt, it took me about 12 outings. I enjoyed every stalk always seeing deer but not always getting a shot due to a mixture of bad luck, walkers, dogs and unsafe backstops, etc. Despite being a relatively experienced casual stalker I always learned something from my AW to make me a better stalker.

In answer to your question "how many stalks to get your level 2?" ~ It takes as long as it takes - no quick fix.

Another level 2 stalk today and again no suitable cull, either no backstop or on the opposite side of a massive bit of clearfell :banghead:

Frustration!

so was i , dont you have to register with your level 1 number to get level 2 papers sent through, atb wayne

i had a candidate that had his L2 portfolio before he even had his FAC !

how about that one , to say the least it didnt go very far after i heard that .

Had a Level 2 candidate out today that was a level 1 with me a couple of years back and he shot two this morning like a pro. That's level 2 done for Patrick G!

As an AW you will presumably be aware of the FAQs on the DMQ website.

http://www.dmq.org.uk/faqdsc2.htm

I.e.

Do I need my own FAC and rifle ?
No. A candidate may borrow a rifle to do their culls provided the rifle is borrowed from the owner or occupier of the ground being stalked, and the FAC holder accompanies the candidate.

I would also add that any candidate who is taking Level 2 should have the experience to know what they are doing before embarking on the 3 witnessed stalks. In the past I have been alarmed at people who claim they know what to do, when it is clearly evident they do not. I have even had some people ask to stalk with me first and watch what I do, and then take their Level 2 witnessed stalk. I politely refused.

Having a FA is not essential for Level 1, but I would add that in my opinion applying and taking Level 2 with out a FA cert or in the process of applying for it is odd :-| not against the rules, but odd in my opinion, as this means you must have gained all your stalking experience borrowing an estate rifle everytime ! Make sure you have enough experience under your belt first, otherwise you may be wasteing your time and money.

Odd but not unheard of, I started helping a friend with his land doing general maintenance of high seats and rides etc. This evolved in me stalking with him on the estate rifle and helping with his culls. I did this for seven years but due to an undergrad degree and doctorate not long after I was a student for eight years and just couldn't afford FAC and rifle. I had the experience and did my level 1 and first two ICR's using the estate rifle function. I had finished the doctorate got a job and a rifle in time for the third. Its amazing the stories that I have heard from people regarding AW's not following the DMQ guidelines. One guy couldn't get his ICR's signed off as he hadn't gralloched his beast in the same way as the AW even though he still did it in an acceptable and hygienic manner. It does seem that a very small minority of AW's believe they have a position of power over the candidate and we should be very careful to make sure that this is not the case. As I understand it the role of the AW is a passive one unless there is a clear risk or danger and then they step in, that is a rather general observation and I certainly wouldn't apply it to all.
