basc all the way alot more goes on behind the secens that no one sees or even thinks about might be that bit more expensive but if i have a problem i have some back up and as much advise as i like

So are you saying it is right that SACS except money and membership from potential members who are not scottish or living in Scotland knowing that when they try and join

ian has not made that point clear to me in past or present
ian has made it clear he will fight for any member regardless of the postcode
i ask as a member of SACS who does not live in Scotland
also this very site has a club membership set up via SACS

i am also a member of BASC and BDS
should I now be worried and avoid SACS because of this David1976..??

Nope, im just saying that both associations make it clear on the front page who and where they represent.

I think SACS are fantastic and am a member myself, I originally joined myself and then took up the stalking directory group offer.

I'm not getting involved in the BASC or SACS debate but I do enjoy the BASC magazine that gets sent out every 2 months and if you compare that to other mags at 5 quid a pop nearly you are getting 30 quids worth of good quality publications each year!

Doesn't make the full membership price too bad in comparison to others then, just for insurance, if you ask me!!

My local ford garage makes it clear on their home page what they deal in
but more than happy to fix my Mitizi if needed too

If I pick up the phone some one from BASC will answer
if I pick up the Phone Elspeth will answer or sometimes Ian will
so service pretty good from either
ian did come from BASC to begin with
not going to slate either org's as they both seem to do a good job in my eyes
if I ever need help
the money I pay each year should prove value for the ***** I may be in and help i will get from it

I am pleased you are happy with your choice, as am I.:)

Quite correct, we could choose to sit back and not combat negative press, nor try combat the failings of the licencing system etc. and just rely on a cheap insurance deal…

We could sit back knowing that our insurance may pay out in the (unlikely) event we have an accident but we will see our shooting eroded away because our cheap insurance company did not bother to stand up and do something about it.

I will happily pay the extra few quid to have a large organisation stand up in the media et al to help keep my sport safer, but if all I want is cheap insurance I know where to go… my home insurance!!!

David

The sound of a man devilishly bailing out a sinking ship.

The nutter had his guns removed. The nutter got them back again. I wonder if he was a member of a shooting organisation who helped get them back?

Thats a very valid point. If I recall his weapons were seized as he (allegedly) had threatened to self harm. There was some campaigning on his behalf to have them returned. They were of course, with tragic consequences a few years later.
There have been threads posted on this very forum where people have had weapons seized and regardless of the circumstances, are urged to seek assistance from one of the orginisations to have them returned.
One things for sure now. If any of us has the misfortune to have our guns removed by police, regardless of who intervenes, they will not be shooting for a while!

Front page of the BASC website makes it clear and lets everyone know its the BRITISH association for shooting and conservation.

Front page of the SACS website makes it clear and lets everyone know its the SCOTTISH association for countryside sports.

Self explanatory I would say, both let you know exactly what area of the country covers so you are in no doubt.

And what about all of the BASC members from Scotland Wales and northern Ireland that plough money into BASC getting value for money? I notice from your events tab that 72% of what you offer is in England with the other 28% split between Scotland Wales and northern Ireland. Hardly a fair split is it but you'll take their money anyway so that argument really doesn't add up does it?

With regards to jimbo123p quote above, can you confirm whether or not BASC has fought to have firearms returned on someones behalf resulting in fatal consequences once returned and is this information available through a FOI request?
What do BASC do for Wales. Well as everyone can see from the Promise Auction part of the latest issue of their magazine NO A LOT. There isn't even a single donation for the whole Welsh Area ?? I think this speaks for itself as an overall feeling for this organisation

check the sac.s web site it tells you that they represent all ther members regardless of where they live +1 for sacs

6 pages and not even a reply from sacs:stir: wtf

Maybe they are to busy trying to stop Mothers Against Guns "MAG" LACS RSPCA bryan may and the rest of them from banning private gun ownership and the shooting of live quarry to respond :?:

a little unfair considering
wot did you offer as a lot.... You are a BASC member are you not ??
and wot does your OH do in relation to BASC Wales

Why should Ian have to come on here to defend himself and SACS... those of us who know him are well aware of the work that he does on our behalf.. defending our sport....
Why does this topic come up time and time again .BASC or SACS. who is best .... ... its my money I will decide who acts best on my behalf .......you pay your money to whom you like ...... So lets just drop it and get on enjoying the sport we all enjoy.

David.

When will we get to hear about the Knockout blow delivered by B.A.S.C., when in general you are ignored by some licensing depts, The same depts that ignore their own steering groups.?

I realised the worth of BASC when the Cumbria shootings happened, it was the worst event to threaten the rights of private gun owners since I started shooting. Whilst my feelings were for the victims and their loved ones, I really feared for the future of our shooting sports. BASC hit the ground running, providing a balanced rational response to the media. I did not see any other organisation do the same. Most people have very limited knowledge of the realities of gun ownership and shooting sports and believe most, if not all of the negative propaganda by the 'anti' groups. It is only by providing the realities of these issues in a calm professional media aware way that the portrayal of legal gun owners can be prevented from being manipulated to the benefit of 'anti groups'.

We have a wide range of organisations representing shooting sports from NRA to CPSA to BASC all with a slightly different view point, and it is this division that weakens our position. We do need a unified voice for all shooting sports but at the present time BASC seem to be the organisation with the ability to defend our sport the strongest.

Cumbria was on par with Hungerford and Dunblane in terms of threats to legal gun ownership, and I do feel that without the balanced representation provided by BASC we could easily have seen a media free for all, and subsequent knee jerk reactions by politicians.

Hence why I am still a BASC member.
