SD deer dog register

Ignoreing the actually dog/tracking side off it, for this to work as it does overseas would u need a change in firearms law in england? Does that have to go to government or can the DI issue a best practice advice (althou i suspect that wouldn't be legal) I know a few off u insist on a police presence to cull an rta deer at roadside to cover ur back's but how would that work if u tracked it a decent distance possibly different landowners, do u ask police to accompany u?

Even in scotland where it is legal to follow a wounded deer on to ur neighbours ground, would that also allow u to follow an RTA deer with a firearm if u have no adjoining ground?

Might need the support of all the major groups to start pressuring/lobbying whoever to start to think about changing laws as i'd imagine it's a pretty slow process

good point.....

All good points, but let us try to not over complicate this, first we have to have a meeting which will be the first step towards agreeing a testing system, a code of conduct/ practice. Then we can and will have something to show any interested organisations or uninterested parties for that matter. As can be seen from the post's there is much to discuss but we must have a structured and solid foundation or it will not last nor will this gain trust and respect from all those who are watching who are not supporters.

This is in hand at the moment only a date and venue to be arranged ain't that right Tony?.

I got a call from a fellow stalker this morning who's client had wounded a big roe buck and he couldn't locate it, he asked if I could help or could I recommend someone with a good tracking dog as this was not a dead deer to find but a very mobile animal, I could not help myself but put him in touch with a good tracking friend of mine.

This got me wondering how many people use the SD deer dog register ether as a stalker or as a tracking team ?

surely its now time for a system like this in this country

http://schweiss.dk/hunters-map

this has got to be the way forward, its good for the stalker and more importantly deer welfare
I know there are lots of issues with this such as boundary's, insurance and training standard's and many more but things must surely change sooner or later, like it, or like it not.

We have more or less the same system http://www.zweethonden.nl/ in the Netherlands. It works quite well. Also in most part of the Netherlands if people call the police because an animal is hit the police call these specialists directly. Also the Dutch AA has this same list of certified tracking dogs and their handlers. These voluntary doghandlers have had special training for dealing with emotional people and stressed and wounded animals next to the roadside. They get orange safety clothing and a roofbar with orange flashing lights for on the car for free from this foundation (zweethonden). Also they get a small fee for their time and effort.
Furthermore it is all set up legally with police and council and highway administration so they have special permits to stand still on high- and motorways and in the verges. They have a special permit to track on private land and carry a fire arm.

It is all done voluntary and i know quite a few of these people and they are all committed to their work and highly skilled. You only get on the list if you did the training and the dog has the neccessarry tracking qualifications. It works in teamshifts per region. So once every so weeks you can be called 24/7 if an animal road side accident takes place.
I take my hat of for both of them as they limit a lot of suffering !:tiphat:

That sounds interesting!

We have te same system here in Belgium as in Holland , Germany , Denmark , ect . Al members are on list and can called up 24/24 hours . Every member is a full voluntary , did training and past a test . Also we have permission to cross boardes , armed , with and without police .

Just wondering: has there been any further progress with this idea?

There has been much discussion so far, and soon we will have a meeting to formulate a structured and workable system hopefully.

Morning..

I find myself int he unfortunate position to be writing this.... Long story short.. I shot and wounded a nice Roe buck 850pm last night. Evreything was in place for a good shot and correct outcome. I was pretty surprised and thought WTF has happened. Looking at my rifle the moderator sleve (sleeve) was about half way off the end of the mod. The front side was ripped form the shot ( which was of deflected as a result) There is a strong thich edge to the mod sleeve which did not rip. Anyway..... everything indicated a gut shot to me. I know exactly where the Roe retured to.. I didnt follow him up.. I checked thoroughly butno sign of a strike.. howver I am confident as I can be that I did hit him and it is a gut shot. Is there anyone available in the Rugby area with a good dog this evening? My 6 month old BMH pup may or may not be up to it... i found no blood at all. I am hoping he is expired in his bed.... if someone is int he area thought I would prefer to go check with a good dog. My other dog is not available to bring :-( Thanks all.... I guess as they say,.,. if you hunt long enough you will injure and loose eventually! Just gutted it has happened like this...

I've just done a quick search in the member list and found this member with deer dog listed in Rugby:

http://www.thestalkingdirectory.co.uk/member.php/11134-shaydewis

Or take a look through the whole list of members with deer dogs available

Hope you manage to find it ok

Alright alex,

i mentioned this a while back but is there an easy way to somehow mange all the deer dog poeple onto some sort of regional data base type thing with out it being too compicated or a lot off work for u, so if u do have a problem it's a bit easier to see who's nearby or willing to travel

Dear all.. Firstly.. I have to say how impressed I am with the number of PMs sent offering help... from 30 min to an hour and a half drive away. One was hopeing and planning on coming but got held up on another search for a roe buck for another stalker. Some offers of help even from people that I have ****ed off here on SD in the past with my not often thought out ramblings ( esp on BMH!!!!! lets not go there ;-) lol) Well.... I just want to say thanks a lot all for the advice and offers of help. It just goes to show that it might be handbags at dawn and a bit of heated debate etc here at times, but at the end of the day we are all interested in deer welfare and very supportive of each other!! awww

I didnt hesitate to come forward to ask for help and own up to what I felt was a wounded deer. Whatever the reason for not putting it down cleanly I have no problem saying if I screw up and so hopefully not make the same mistake twice. ON the subject of a deer register etc.. judging from the offers of help I had here I know where to come if I have any trouble again.

I dont want to say who did come to help out in the end as I didnt ask if I could, but thanks again to you for doing so. I feel a lot better about what possibly took place for having gone through it with you ( and your dog)

For everyones interest, it all really seems to indicate toward the shot not hitting the deer at all. I knew his reaction was not typical but I had to assume it was a strike as I was saying. But the backstop could well account for the impact sound I heard and the deers reaction could well have been from that close encounter. No sings of a wound, hair blood or nothin. Because of the deflection, the reaction and the noise I just had to assume it was a gut shot ( unconventional one) until I had reason to think otherwise. So thanks again to the SD member that came and spent nearly 3 hours with me and giving up his evening to do so.

I will return in some nights times to sit it out and see if the buck is roaming around as usual... If he is uninjured as I now believe/hope then I should definitely see him within a few night. I cant get back till Monday night so I will let you all know if I have a result.

Thanks again all.... thanks SD member for giving up your evening... it isnt a loss that we only found fresh signs...... hopefully he is there and healthy... If he is I will know within the week!! It was a horrible feeling alright to think I had caused an animal to die slowly and suffer, but there is plenty of hope now to think otherwise.
