You are correct that in many countries that is the case indeed when I was living in Canada I took thier forearms and hunter sfety course then could buy what ever rifle or shotgun I liked as long as it wasn't an auto , however these countriessadly have much more sensible police and politicians than we do I'd love to share your enthusiasms that such a situation may happen here but in all honesty I think we have too many people who know nothing about guns making the laws for us and I can't see that ever changing sadly

Nice to see some sense as I said earlier it will come if we allow it instead if initiating it to meet our own needs and the common good even if I didn't express it well earlier my point was that we should LEAD & others follow(ACPO,DEFRA,CC,DE, etc) so we get something which fulfills everyone's requirements but is in our interests and workable unlike the current mishmash of legislation, purely voluntary of corse!

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE (which is what we've been trying in vain to do for years) when something dose happen ther will be no defence and the government will take action regardless of need as they have in the past just look at their track record we have the opertunity to craft something workable for all that ensures public safety & the preservation of our sport, can we not agree to move forward in our own future interest.

I agree, perhaps the biggest challenge facing the shooting community at present is to persuade our representative organisations to get proactive.

Politicians and police only appear to show interest in firearms legislation in the aftermath of someone running amok with a firearm and then we have the reactive response in our defence, this is not good enough.

With cost cutting and streamlining now in fashion in the public sector S1 of Firearms Act needs attention.


Mention has been made in this thread of experienced based training, if this became the norm whether on a voluntary or mandatory basis what useful purpose would mentoring conditions, land clearance, territorial and calibre restrictions serve?

Is it not too much to ask that the authorities recognise that we are responsible law abiding citizens and let us make our own judgements about where we shoot, with what gun and at which quarry?

Do you not think that like everything else, eventually there will be an E.U. Directive?

Like the "Driver CPC", where everyone who earns a living driving a coach or lorry is now forced to take the exam which costs anywhere between £30 - £70 per day and you are required to attend five 8 hour courses.

To add insult to injury, there is no exam at the end of it, drivers just need to bring their drivers licence and then sit in a classroom for 8 hours listening (in the main) to stuff they already know more about than the lecturer bored shitless! Of course whilst all your drivers are off the road and paying for this, the company has to acquire new drivers so the business doesn't collapse.

By September this year all coach drivers have to have done this or they will be unable to drive a coach.

September next year all truck drivers will have to comply as well or they lose the right to drive.

So how long do you think it will be before the E.U. direct shooters in the UK to have to carry out some form of test?

This being the case then it would be stupid to let the opportunity of discussing wider issues such as S1 conditions slip whilst we have his attention.

There is apparently a dramatic change of attitude in their FLD and I think that he might actually have some grasp of the difference between the lawful use of firearms and the criminal use.

This being the case then it would be stupid to let the opportunity of discussing wider issues such as S1 conditions slip whilst we have his attention.

After the debacle of an investigation that followed the handing in of hand guns policy is now not to let people in the FL department that are also in the shooting community.

It is now for the shooting comunity to get behind the initiative, olive branch of Andy Marsh, with a figurehead to build a working partnership like Regan&Thatcher (terrible but it worked for them) if we want to move any obstacles & the useless bureaucracy within the firearms licensing system.

Although I wonder how much Mr Marsh is driven by a genuine concern or pound signs?
