Roe Rut

Davie I was gutted mate, I was filming from 20ft up so you wouldn't have missed a thing right from where he left the doe right up to the shot ! hey ho there is always next time.

Actually seems to have stopped in Edinburgh - both places where there was activity last week were completely quiet last night.

Anyone near Jedburgh/Melrose/Hawick want to make predictions for this weekend??

well bonchester and jedburgh were dead last weekend, there's been rutting rings and other signs, but I have not seen any chasing at all...I started seeing the first chasing two days ago..

I expect some real serious action this coming saturday!

Called Sat and Sunday past! Nothing doing in my patch of D&G, I am away this weekend so expect to miss it, maybe already have?.......

Manage to call three bucks tonight with in a hour. First one came after 10 mins the other two came near a nuff together running parallel about 100yrds apart,10 minutes after first shot. The weather here is perfect for it.

yep! indeed, I'll send you a kit kat!

I think I'll claim that kit kat... not a peep Friday evening or Saturday morning. In an area I usually see between 2 and 6 deer, didn't see a thing, and none out on surrounding fields. No response to call, no donuts in the grass, nothing. Actually a little eerie for it to be *so* empty.

Strange, I did 3 visits to one of my local spots last week 0400-0600 before work, I've just done 2 visits this week 1730-2130 after work and where I was seeing a few bucks & does April/May, now nothing, as you describe no circles in grass, no response to call, worst thing no fresh droppings & no new slot marks on regular tracks
Was just starting to think WTF

Out this morning.
Grassed 2 poorer bucks but saw plenty more including 'better' bucks......most of them had only one thing in mind ...the rut is well and truly in full swing in Aberdeenshire
Good time to identify and weed out the poorer stock

Anyone got any news on the Rut in Hampshire. I'm out tomorrow and was wondering what my chances are of calling in a buck or two?

It's definitely underway near the New Forest. Bucks don't appear to be coming to the call but they are chasing the does.

Just got back with an American client and taken a silver medal head and the rut is now on in West Sussex.

3 bucks to the call in the last week - one in east Hampshire, two in Surrey.

I'd say though that the level of activity seems to be low in general. One theory that has been advanced to me was that the hot weather happened to coincide with a full moon mid-way through the month which perhaps has seen much more rutting happening at night (in the cool) which explained the dearth (for me at least) during July. Certainly the 3 most recent animals have not had a great deal of fat remaining.

The last buck I took on Sunday AM though took 3 squeaks to produce a classic thick woodland, heart-in-the-mouth & running towards me with a squeak to stop & shot offhand at less than 10 yards.

I like to end the season on a good note, and If I don't shoot another buck this year, that will have done me very well :)
