Roe reaction to Cherry wood caller

On Sat afternoon we were out on a our regular dog walk. I took a cheerywood caller and a butalo.
5 mins up the lane and first calls. Oats on left wheat on right. Two quick peeps and a old roe doe burst out of the hedge 20 yds away. Quick stare off and she departed.
20 yds further overlooking wheat. Roe buck head came up after a couple of peeps.
200yds further cherrywood had another buck reveal himself in another field of wheat. This was getting silly
Another 200yds another buck staring at me.
10 mins later we are in a set aside strip between maize and railway embankment. 3 peeps and a lovely doe appears in the setaside. Despite being directly downwind she kept coming for a few seconds then exited into the maize.
Best experience was about 20 mins later. Effectively on the other side of the railway. 3 peeps and we saw movement on the embankment 200yds away. Roe doe and kid. They ran down the fence line and hopped into the grass field. Gentle peeps coaxed her to 20 yds! Sadly dreadful phone pictures but truly lovely sight of the dpe and kid through my Geovids.
Conclusion of trial was the cherrywood was much better than the butalo.
Roe does reacted strongly bucks only a passing interest but showed themselves.
Let's see what happens when I have a rifle 20250719_162511.webp20250719_165722.webpwith me.

Sound like you have got the pitch spot on - mark it to keep the setting.

My mate had one, he called in 4 munties one afternoon with me, so naturally I went out and bought one.

My results were absolutely useless and wasn’t sad when I lost it.

May have originally been a right time, right temp, right place affair, but always thought it was down to exactly the right pitch.

If your lucky is anything like mine, you just know in advance that carrying a rifle will mean that the effect of the caller is nil🤣
Hence the old saying if you want to see deer carry a fishing rod,if you want to see fish carry a rifle.
Best of luck on your quest.
Guns smell of burnt gunpowder, gun oils, linseed oil, old blood etc etc. There is a very distinctive smell when you open up the cabinet. Even more so when you open an old gun case.

I rather suspect that is quite an odd smell in nature.

So you are just going for a walk. Most deer will encounter people most days, and most people are not a threat, so deer will just carry on doing what they do regardless.

However carry a rifle, and if deer catch your wind they will also catch the smell of the rifle and that is an unusual smell for them. That will put them on high alert and they will disappear.

We can help by reading the wind and working with it to our advantage. But wind does just go in a straight line, it eddies and flows and has back currents and up currents and down currents, just a like river or tide does when it flows. So even if you feel the wind in your face, if you have trees, gullies, hills etc this can cause your and the rifles scent to be carried to the deer.

There may also be effects of your behaviour. When stalking we tend to sneak about trying to be quiet etc. I am sure this is picked up as well.

In the African bush animals are really not worried about a well fed lion just wandering through. But they know when its hungry.

Deer are bastards. It’s almost like they don’t want to be shot. 🙄

On Sat early evening I called in 3 roe bucks. Best one was in a big field of oats. Saw its head 200+ yds away. First pheep had him interested 2nd started coming in. Successive peeps got him to 20 yds.
Had one burst out of a thick hedge almost next to us. 3rd was a v good mature buck which was following a doe. He came to 50 yds.
As the rut progresses it seems to be super effective. Its easier than calling foxs.

You lot have no patience 4 things that are key and the last one is essential-

1 - Location ( that’s not correct you will fail)
2- weather conditions (warm and bloody humid, thundery even better)
3- time and date ( 99% are too keen and call early! I don’t even think about it to the last week of July 1 week of August)
4- patience (reading all the threads on the roe rut you all expect miracles to happen instantly sometimes it can take half an hour 45 minutes to call a buck if you’re not patient again you will fail!)

And be ready on sticks etc at the first squeak in case it does come charging in to within 20 feet - with your scope turned right down

In my v limited experience you normally get a response within minutes. Agree rifle on sticks and scope on lowest mag.

I was in the right location this evening and took me a good half hour to call the buck, so many possibilities after all they are wild creatures and don’t read the instruction manual
