Just a quick one, does anyone have any info or advice on the above caliber for uk stalking? i was thinking of geting somthing to go with my .270.. any info would be great. Cheers, Mo

A real nice flat shooter, excellent Fox medicine! A mate shoots one on deer, he's well pleased. (Shame about the ten round box though!)

I use one for everything and have shot both sexes of all 6 species with it, even large lowland Reds. It is a very versatile calibre and great for foxes as stated, as the fast flat trajectory is very forgiving at long ranges against smaller targets. Bullet choice up to 120 grain. If you do get one though, I bet your .270 won't see much daylight again!

An alternative thought is that the 25/06 comes quite close on the heels of the 270. You might be better served with a 243 as a fox / small deer rifle. This would allow you to cover a bigger spread of uses, 243 from 55-100gr, 270 from 110 to 160grs.

Mo. I liked my .25-06 and I know of estates that use .25-06 as the rifle for taking guests out to stags. However I think C_D makes an excellent point. 270 and .25-06 have the same parentage and only 20 thou difference in bullet diameter. Also .257 bullets aren't available in such great variety as 243. I replaced my .25-06 with a 260 Rem and that's where I am sticking at the minute. Rgds JCS

I think that the answer is best dealt with by this question: What bullet weight do you currently shoot in your 270?

If you currently shoot a 130 grain bullet, or lighter, in the 270 then really you'll not see much benefit using the 25-06 with the "standard" 117 grain bullet.

But if you shoot, as some increasingly do, a 140 grain or 150 grain "low velocity" bullet at 2,700fps to 2,800fps in your 270 then a 25-06 with a 117 grain bullet might make sense for foxes.

In real life the 130 grain 270 and 117 grain 25-06 as loaded at the factory are so close together in performance as no animal would ever know the difference.

One last thing. The 25-06 works best with 24" long barrels.

As said before, 25-06 and a 270 would give you 2 very similar rifles. maybe 243 or smaller might be a better choice giving a wider range.

I've had both and would stick with 270 for larger deer maybe a [if in England or Wales] 243 for foxes &roe, in Scotland you could always use a 22cf. Remember 270 is an awesome fox round!!!!!

Hmmm now if you shoot the 100 grain bullets from the 25-06 and either the 130 or 140 grains one from the 270 then I believe you would have the best of both worlds.

have your .270 zero,ed with a 130gr soft point and get yourself a .243 shooting a 75gr balistic tip that combo would cover everything in the uk and you wouldent need to be swapping bullet weights and rezeroing

Alternatively, get a 25.06 and use 100 or 115 grain bullets. That will also cover everything in uk and you can sell the 270 and buy a nice scope to go on the 25.06 too! Sorted!

Seriously though, the 270 & 25.06 are fairly closely matched to be getting one of each.

I have a 30.06 which I now use alongside the 25.06 but I don't intend on using less than 168grainers in it as again they would be too close in performance. The main reason I went larger was for lowland reds and the outside chance of Boar.
