Ppu is it good enough for hunting?

It seems to me that people of a certain type, class PPU in the same light as Baikel shotguns forgetting that an awful lot of Baikel shotguns have accounted for a lot of pigeons over the years.
The Baikel only gets changed when the user takes up Game shooting !!

I home load but when in a store & they have priv ammo .... At the price it goes for it's near as dam price of home loading ... & groups 1" ish if I do my bit.

Saves a heap of time home loading and does the job

Only minor thing I would say is occasionally think that it can be a wee but hard and maybe not expand as it should .... But that's not majority of time ... Just a wee observation after using it in 2 calibres for a while

Just hope that due to it's popularity that the price doesn't hike up

agreed but at the end of the day if you fired a bit of gravel at 3000fps it will kill

I am intrigued how for standard stalking purposes any cup and core design is failing to kill humanely and it is down entirely to the bullet construction and constituent materials.
We are not shooting dangerous game or buffalo here.

if it goes through both sides, slows down a bit between the two and gets a bit wider on the way......that is all it has to do!

Very true, probably more down to shot placement and managing the expectations of newer people who have only used varmint rounds before shooting deer.

I use the same bullet here for Moose , Elk and bear , they work great . I've also used their 8mm bullets with really good results .

The first load I built for my 8x57 vintage Mauser with the 196-gr PPU bullets shot a cluster, all shots touching, just using the Lyman receiver sight. I gave the load to someone as a start for his 8x60S, and he went no further, getting 2,500 fps. He shot a large bear head on, in the chest, and it exited the rear ham, turning it into a rug right on the spot.

some guys say it rubbish because its cheap that's bull**** it shoots as good as my home loads and I have not had a runner with them and I have also not had a bullet not exit yet. some rifles like them some don't so why pay silly money for so called premium ammo when ppu is more than up to the job and at half the price.

I've tried them in 6.5x55 and they grouped on a par with norma BT' s, at nearly three times the price. The occasional bullet felt overly tight when closing the bolt and a sizeable percentage allowed a fair amount of carbon past the neck, so were dirty to handle. The heavier rounds were a bit close to 2450 fps for my liking and I'd really only use them for cheap target practice rounds.

285 gr 9.3x62 do fine for me on European boar and in Africa.

Are you able to by your 9.3 priv in the Uk or do you buy it abroad?
just Kranks keep telling me that they will not import 9.3mm bullets or ammo in 62 or 74r when ever I ask them:suss:

I use PPU in .222, 308, 300WM and 9.3x62 It works very well. I bought 2000 308 and it has the same POI as my normal hunting ammunition. I cant remember if I have stalked with it but it is certainly accurate enough.

i emailed Kranks for some info on them. They stock 8mm but not 9.3mm. "We would have to order 20,000 of them to get them in stock"
A shame when you can get them in Europe and the states but not here :-(

I class PPU in the same light as Baikal shotguns.
I've tried plenty of factory ammo (up to £30 a box) in my .243 rifle and nothing else groups as well as the £10 a box PPU.
I've tried fancy £££££ shotguns but I am a far better shot with my £75 Baikal !

I've used PPU for years in my Rem 700 243, no complaints at all, tho, have had one or two flyers...but that was probobly down to me "snatching" the trigger...I've started reloading and using PPU and Feds for it...:)

BTW, Years ago, I used to go out with a girl, who's bro shot clays for Scotland in the Commonwealth Games,I'm sure he got a medal or two.... he used a Baikal...:)

He could well have done. Baikel made some very expensive competition guns in those days.
They may still do but I have never seen them advertised and none of the aspiring clay shooters of today would admit to using a Baikel, it wouldn't be good for their image.:D

I have never got great accuracy from PPU but good enough for deer. Never had the deer complain about the terminal Ballistics!

I have 8 boxes of PPU 8x57 with the 196 grain RN ammo set aside because I have two Husqvarna Model 648 sporters and the sights are regulated for the 196 grain load. I shoot a 206 grain cast bullet from mine, but my son has yet to try his and I'm betting it will shoot those PPU to point of aim. (Lovely rifles. Lovely round)~Muir

The Husky 648 is sweet, slim and well-balanced. I have not shot the PPU 8x57 ammo, but it should do about 2,450 fps out of that full 23.5 inch barrel. I got a deal on some new PPU brass, bought their match bullets at $22.00 as a cheap practice load for my Hornady 195-gr SPT, and then added on some 196-gr SPT. I was pleasantly surprised at how well both the PPU bullets shot out of my Yugo M48 and my Sauer 98 Mauser.

I need to get looking for a Husky 648 sporter in 6.5x55 Swede, because I see 648s as low as $250.00 in really good condition.

I think the 648 is one of the finest handling rifles I have ever shot. Whatever I look at when I snap the rifle to the shoulder ends up with the sights neatly planted on it. I have taken to placing the target in the font sight hood as the rifle is mounted and when the butt hits the shoulder, the sights are usually aligned.

Try Simpson's LTD on-lne for a 648. They have them. ~Muir

(Their not $250 any more, though. Closer to $395 for a good one.)

I'm sure in NZ PPU is marketed as Highland Ammunition....never had any issues with it in .303 or .223.....its cheap and does the job...

Just returned from a Monteria in Portugal and I can show you pictures of four boar that can (well actually cannot) vouch for the effectiveness of PPU 150 grain softnose in .270. As long as they group and you can put them in the right place they will kill.
