Hello All,

I hope to put a variation in for a .308, I currently have a .243 which I use for Deer foxing range practice, I would like to have the same for the .308, I am just a bit word blind on how to put it across on the form!.
any tips or pointers is much appreciated, I have no closed conditions on my licence.

thanks
SR.

You've already got a rifle that's deer legal, but you want a bigger one as well, so I'd go with:

"Large deer species, Any Other Lawful Quarry and zeroing".

That’s what I put when I wanted a .270 in addition to my .243 that was already conditioned for deer.

(The "AOLQ" bit ensures you've got your arse covered if you also use the .308 for smaller deer, foxes, boar etc).

Are you sure a 308 is going to have sufficient knock-down power for 'tricky' large fallow and the occasional wild boar that roam the woods, meadows and greensand escarpments (otherwise known as the perfect natural backstop) throughout Kent?

Get it right first time if at all possible

“ I need a bigger gun. The Mrs says what we have is too small.”

P.S.
She wouldn’t be averse to trying a .375 H+H.
She’s a full blooded lass.

The new online form does't allow much explanation for good reason. Mine read .223 Small deer, vermin ALQ. 30-06 was large deer, wild boar (abroad), ALQ
You don't really need an essay on the form, just be prepared to expand a bit if the FEO asks.

Dear Sirs,

I am putting in for a variation for a 308 Win as I now have access to deer stalking larger species such as Red and Fallow Deer as well as Wild Boar. These include xyz farm near abc. As you will appreciate my current 243 is below the recommended minimum of 270 for wild boar. And given the requirements for non toxic ammunition the 308 gives many more workable options than the 243. I also have opportunities to head North to Scotland to shoot red deer, where again the 308 is preferred for the bigger deer.

Yours faithfully etc

I always work on the basis of give enough information for them to make a positive decision at first read of the application rather than then requiring them to pick up the phone and start asking lots of questions.

Recently done the same with west mercia.
FEO came for a chat as I wanted an open ticket as well. I told him I was going to shoot more of the bigger species and whilst I was happy with the .243 using solid copper, I wanted more knock down power for larger species with non leads.

I had prepared a couple of round energy comparisons based on Hornady CX .243 and .308. Regardless of the debate around non lead FEO’s are now on the bandwagon.
The fact I had clearly done some homework helped.

Have they removed the ‘notes’ section from the end of the form?

But

But if he puts them down as his good reason he may well get asked to evidence that good reason, if he hasn’t got boar in his ground or paid boar trips booked he won’t be able to.
Which is why you ask for "AOLQ" in addition to your primary "good reason", and don't bombard them with a whole lot of "possibly in the future" nonsense. Otherwise you're just giving them "good reason" to ask awkward questions that will most likely result in you not getting what you want.

You're correct in that I've known a FEO who insisted that any request for a boar condition needed to be evidenced backed. That said, I wasn't suggesting that the Op's request be based wholly on a need to shoot boar but rather he couldn't rule out encountering such in the life of the Certificate.

That most sensible and accommodating FEO's will now condition an Open Certificate with ALQ wording, makes such a concern an irrelevance but there may be some who choose to stick with separating deer, vermin and boar.

Totally agree, but at least 2 of the posts suggested using boar to justify the larger calibre, which isn’t sensible if he hasn’t actually got the opportunity to shoot boar at the time of applying.

AOLQ will simplify things if he then gets the opportunity to shoot them at a later date, but they shouldn’t be part of the application.

Correct.

Although I have to confess at this point that my first ever variation for a centrefire rifle (the .243 that I bought from @Rake Aboot many moons ago) did read something like a wishlist of "things I'd like to shoot one day", and the whole lot was granted! I hadn't heard of AOLQ in those far-off days, and I wouldn't recommend anyone following my example. I can remember exactly my conversation with the FEO, and it was quite amusing! It helped that I had had dealings with him before, and that he was partial to my homebrew.
