Truck free stalking?

I havn't read the whole thread, but I wouldn't take on a lowland fallow permission if I had to drag everything. Stalking will quickly become a chore and you wont hit the numbers and or injure yourself. Even a 4x4 can't cross fields in winter. I would look for a second hand 4WD quad with mud tyres and car trailer to get it there.
A cheap submarine might have been an advantage with 70-90 yd ruts 4ft deep. It is indeed a chore but when its your part of your livelyhood you do what you can. I've carried 2 bucks half a mile uphill in the evenong, gralloched and hung 2 more up, and gone back next morning for them.

This works pretty well to me. If I cannot reach by car the anshutz I park it as near as possible and drag the quarry with a cheap chinese sled..then I can lift it on the trailer with a minimal effort as you can see in the video. Legal to drive with it at home as soon as you have a triling hook fitted on the car and plate and ligts are not obscurated. No ticks keds around in the veicle. click the link for the video

I used a Skoda Octavia scout for stalking, fishing, shooting and ferrying the dogs about for a number of years and it coped well on all but the roughest of tracks where ground clearance became an issue. Last year I bought my first pick up and I wish I had done it years ago. I can keep the cab nice and clean and not stinking of dogs and anything dead that may have been in the back. I have built a set of drawers with false floor and a divider so I can separate dogs from any kit and or game or can separate the dogs from each other if need be. Would I drive a pick as an everyday vehicle if it was all I had? probably not as even the best ones are quite crude when it comes to ride quality not to mention slow as f**k and get a bit thirsty if you try and go quick.

So, am I the only one on here who doesn’t have a truck or 4x4 to work with? As I approach my first permission I’m feeling pretty under-gunned in the wheels department as I’m going to have to make do with either an Audi a6 estate or a VW polo. The Audi has ample boot space but low ground clearance. The polo has more clearance but is going to feel a squeeze with more than a muntjac in the boot! The new ground has a lot of fallow I understand and access will be a bit mixed. I’m in for a lot of dragging I dragging. Anyone else in the same boat and any suggestions for how to make the best of it? A replacement car isn’t an option at the moment sadly.

Although I have a soft roader the 70 acre wood I stalk is not drivable. So I got one of these.
Used it just after 4am to drag a stout muntjac
Around a mile today. Over grass and leaf litter it works perfectly far better than expected. Screenshot_20260630-152144_Temu.webp

Nothing wrong with a VW polo 👀

Heckpack or pickup is definitely the way to go if funds allow. My pal had a discovery 2 a couple of seasons ago that regularly brought home a handful of fallow including some stinky bucks each weekend. The discovery developed a very sweet scent by mid December, discovery carpets really hold the blood.
