1" hunting scopes

I've fallen into the trap in the past ... the bigger is better scope idea ... I spent at the time over £900 on a scope (Sightron S-tac 2.5-17.5) ... and whilst it is stunning glass ... and a lovely scope ... I ended up with a bloody heavy setup that I didn't enjoy using and didn't think was that functional.

I recently saw a post on here about the Swarovski Z3 3-10 x 42 with a 1" tube, saying they were good scopes and very light (360g).

Looking at it this would be much more suited to my needs, but they have been sadly discontinued.

Are there similar quality and setup scopes out there for the bloke who doesn't want or need to be taking 3-600 yard shots on field mice?

To solve the above issue I ended up buying a Rem mod 7 308, which had a S&B 6.42, but currently sports a Vortex 4-16x44, both of which make for a very light and handy setup ... but I still have my 243 and a newly acquired 223 which sports a night vision scope but could do with a day sope for future daytime use :)

The Swaro Z3 should still be available in the USA. Otherwise there are some 1 inch scopes in the Leupold Freedom and VX-3 HD lines.

I picked up a used Zeiss hd5 on here with a 25mm tube, very happy with it and see no disadvantage to the 30mm tubes I’ve had in the past

I would be a bit wary of the Swarovski Z3. In converstation with a biggish reetailer of Swarovski scope in the US he said that the 1'' Z 3 Scopes can have problems because the tube metal is so thin. They are easier damaged by bad mounting or a fall than some others. He said the Z5 line that arent available in the UK are better. The Meopta scopes are good I think. I have a couple of the old Zeiss Conquest scopes that were made by Meopta ( Meopro line I htink) that are good.

I have a Z3 that I purchased on here that I am very happy with other than that the eye relief is quite short. It would be worth having a look at the Meopta Meostar R2. I think they do something very similar.

Surely a light 'scope is just that a light scope. I have a 2 - 8 x42 Duralyt which isn't awfully heavy even with a 30mm tube. A fixed mag or small zoom range might save the weight without worrying about the extra 4.6mm of tube diameter. Just a thought to make for wider choices. Non illuminated saves a bit of weight too.

David.

Have a look at Doctor or ziess swaro plenty one inch tubes but may have to be second hand

Look at the Leupold VX-3HD scopes, great quality and fantastic glass, some are very light, even with a 50 mm objective lens.

I am another one who doesn’t like the physical bulk of the 30mm Scopes. I have a couple, but don’t really like them.

I wish Shmidt & Bender still made their 2.5-10x40 Summit scope. I should have bought one when they were available. I have a Leica in the same mag, but with 30mm is just too bulky for my liking.

Did you find a scope that was suitable? Just wondering as I have a spare Swarovski Z5 3.5-18 x 44 BT L with plex reticule and ballistic turret fitted sat there sill boxed as I had been intending to set up a lightweight rifle for the hill but never got round to it. This is very light and has the 1" tube you were looking for and better made than the Z3's as has already been mentioned. Now stalking with a Blaser R8 with a Z8 fitted so doubt I will get around to using it. If you are interested let me know.
