The little cheap ones from Halfords etc that cost £20 are great for pumping up the tires if they are a bit flat. If you have let the tires down to give extra traction on snow, mud etc it may take 20 mins to get them all back up to pressure. If its occasionally, or you are in no rush then brew up a cup tea and relax.
I keep one in the car amd its used a few times a year, mostly on trailer tires.
Proper 4x4 / overland type work where are deglating and re inflating tires to suit road conditions regularly then a compressor with a decent sized tank allows much more speed, but at the cost of weight, space and £££.
