A friend is just back from Hungary culling roe does. Was using a 30-06 with 150 grain gamekings. The keeper over there advised him the only excellent calibre " in his idea " for culling those does. = 243 win
The meat is for the market, so clean shots are favoured. They shoot, with good support, at rather long range over there. 200-250 metres is what I consider long range for roe. 243 with 85 grain Nosler Partition could be ideal.

Roe does not = Deer. A Roe is a type of Deer but one of the smaller species and at least in Germany, they consider "small game". So while 243 is adequate for Roe it is definitely not a cartridge for all deer, better classified as a varmint cartridge.

Your talking out of your a-hole. The Germans can consider Roe to be whatever they like, they are Deer.

Kind sir, Please note I said "A Roe is a type of deer...". Better to read first, comprehend, then respond.

Reminds me of a sign my fifth grade teacher had on his wall: Be sure brain is engaged before putting mouth into gear"

They certainly categorise roe among the so-called 'low game' (Niederwild).
However, if we keep in mind that the 'high game' (Hochwild) includes red deer and the capercaillie it becomes clear that these two Teutospecific categories are not necessarily based on size.

50 to 70 grain 223 bullets have killed thousands of 50-100 kg persons in war. A 80-100 grain bullet in 243 should at least be able to do the same. Game in the 80-100 kg class should not be a problem in comparison to the 223 bullets.

Amazing as it might sound, most animals seem to have a greater will to live than humans. The one exception I know of is goats, this is one of the reasons they are used in Special Forces medical training. Nnce shot stabbed or burnt they will die on you quicker than you can imagine. Generally, if your goat dies you fail....

We have it on unassailable authority that literacy is important in effective argumentation. "Once" is the word here, perhaps?

On a happier note, this malodorous goat of a thread of yours is simply trotting on and on - so you haven't failed yet!

IMHO, a well placed 85 HPBT out of a .243 should be more than adequate to put that poor goat out of its misery once and for all......

Yawn........

Mods....please step in and put us out of our misery!

I wouldn't discuss that and I agree that many of those " war victims" are only wounded. On the other hand you see many boar ( not the very heavy ones ) culled in New Zealand and Australia with a 223 and Barnes TSX bullets. Many war victims are killed with one bullet out of a 223.
I fully agree that the 243 is not the msot favoured round for heavy game. Certainly not my choice neither. But for lighter game like roe, fallow, red hinds, goats, chamois, ..... a 243 with a good bullet is very lethal.
Bullet choice is probably very important in this calibre. A 80 grain Barnes TTSX launched at 243 velocities in a vital spot of a deer will be deadly. The same for a good Nosler Partition.
Game in the 50-100 kg class must be easely killed with a good bullet out of a 243.

and if you consider that a 300 to 400 gr 375, 416 or 458 bullet is more than adequate for a buffalo (800-1000 kg class) or an elephant (3000 plus) class then it's nonsense that a bullet 1/3 of the weight, going quite a bit faster is not adequate for an animal 1/10 of the size. 243 is perfect for smaller deer - roe, and hinds, especially if you need to shoot at 100 to 200 yds. It's a bit fast though for close range woodland shots, but does the job. And if you are shooting a red stag with one, just be patient and place shot accordingly. Yes a 270, 7mm, 300 win mag may knock them over whereas with a 243 they will run, but still game over within a few seconds.
