.243 for NI

I’m really impressed at the maturity of the group here not to post about or ridicule the suggestion of a 6.5

I know it must be killing you. Allow me as a multiple creedmoor owner to introduce some banter while recommending the only rifle you’ll ever need

Just swapped my .243 for a 25-06 as I need a bit more smack for large bucks at distance. I have a 22/250 for smaller stuff so it depends on what I'm after that day. Used a 25-06 years ago, flattened anything I shot at but then I also had my old 7x57.

My advice would be to go for a cartridge that is readily available in Northern Ireland. A 308 is a very good all round cartridge, and in lighter bullet weights recoil without a moderator is a non issue.

Key on recoil is to have a stock that has enough length, and scope position far enough forwards so it doesn’t hit you. I have shot 243’s and 308s with short stocks and scope too far back - both unpleasant.

Don’t be tempted to go super light weight, super short barrel or super heavy barrel. Both of the former make rifles harder to shoot well and consistently, the latter makes shooting easy, but you have to carry it.

Probably mostly reds where I am with the occasional trip for sika and/or fallow. Also likely foxes and there are lots of rumours of muntjac locally but I haven’t seen any evidence of them in the permissions I have walked.
Plenty of rumours no proof or some muppet would have plastered over Shooting NI
