.243 vs .25-06 ??

Thar.....?????
I guess the relly serious ones, or just the ones that have got "the bug" are the ones that will go out time after time and be happy whether they get a beast or not. After all it is not just about killing, but about the whole experience, outdoors, wildlife, elements and that certain ???? that no one can quite put their finger on.

But whether they load there own rounds....not sure that makes them serious.

Stone.....
I think they were debating "serios riflemen", now they probably do reload themselves, but I was more interested in the serious stalker.

PS How does everyone highlight quotes? Thanks.

sorry duncs i was close though
serious stalker must be the one with a back pocket full of pictures of the same person and a bloody big pair of binos around his neck

Well i would like to think I am serious. when I go stalking I have to for the weekend because of the distance. I sleep in the back of my pickup truck, I go on range days to make sure that the factory ammunition that I use can be put where I need it and I make sure I only take a shot that 'should' kill and is safe. Is that serious enough or have i failed a test. Oh, been shooting for 40 years.

i am not sure you will ever get the answer to that question!!!
i shoot any thing from 30 deer upwards as number of deer on my ground permits or what extra funds i hav to buy more stalking .
i live ,sleep and spend most of my spare time stalking and shooting or things related to that
i also reload my own ammo and hav done for over ten years but am not a perfectionist as others are
buy all the right gear to suit my needs and often hav spare for others that come out with me to use
getting up at all hours and staying out till the death at times , often i am driving all over the country to feed this obsession
may be i am serious stalker or just obsessed with it, i am not sure may be i need help , is there a doctor in the house

I think I am on the wrong site to mention “Serious stalker” I having been following the beaver posts with interest  as I have hunted a few in the past, so instead we could substitute “enthusiastic” for serious.

2506 / 308
I think the 308 was made for heads of 150gr to 180gr,
a mid to upper range range 25-06 head is about 100gr.
If these are compared the 25-06 just doesn't reach the
energy figures of the 308, not even way out.
If you take Nosler BT's the 100gr's bc is .393
the 30 cal 150 is .435.
Even the 115gr 25cal is only .453 vs the .475 for 165gr or
even .507 for the 180gr.

The only advantage of the 25-06 is it shoots a bit flatter.
Killing power goes to the 308 anyway.
Or would someone choose a 25-06 when bear shooting.

If reds and sika are involved I'd rather choose the 270 if
a long action is really needed. Nice choice of practical
bullet weights.

My view:
25-06 is a good crossover vermin(30%) deer(70%) round
compared to 243 vermin (70%) deer(30%).

We don't have roe, but if it where only roe then I'd choose
either 243 or 25-06 over a 308 or 270.

cheers

25.06 will out shoot a 308 anyday. For longer distance and carry more punch its a 25.06. I love it, but then the 308 is a good round as well.

Dont get to wrapped up in which calibre is best, as long as the rifle suits you and fits you that is all that matters. But i would add that if you intend on doing a lot of Red Stalking the 25.06 would be my choice.

My choice, but not always everyone else. Each to their own, as long as the bullet is in the right place ;)

What heads are you running in the 25-06?
I know that this cal is capable of more than expected of it.
A friend has one and had great fun with it in Africa and on Sika here.

Hello ejg. I have hunted Africa a few times and taken the 25.06, it did not take any prisoners.

I shoot 120grain speer boat tail loaded with Hodgsons H4831 51grains pushes it out at 3040 fps. Or H4350 47.5grains pushes it out at 2816 fps, which is the normal load I use for Stags.

For hinds I use 100grain speer bt loaded again with Hodgsons H4350 50grains pushes it out at 3155 fps.

There are only a few bullet weights for the 25.06, as its a wildcat round it is true you do not get the versatility of great bullet weight choice. However as Thar has mentioned it shoots flat, and hits hard. It is a very underated calibre IMHO I have used it for many years and own a synthetic stock stainless Ruger Mod77 with the Sturm Ruger Skeleton solid stock.

I love this rifle and the round and I will admit on the odd occassion I have pulled off some long shots when I have needed to after a client has slipped up on the hill. I have also shot a great many Sika with this calibre, never lost a beast yet. Touch wood !!!

I was thinking of getting a 25-06 at some stage,
but it just does lacks at distance, it's just a 25.
If you compare data the closest a 25-06 hunting tip in any factory weight
gets to a 308 in energy is at the muzzle.
If the higher muzzle energy has also the higher bc then it will
increase the energy gap at distance.
Just look at the federal data they have like for like nosler heads.
For example:
2506 Nos Accubond 110 bc .418 at 500yds 1024 ft pounds
308 Nos Accubond 165 bc .475 at 500yds 1272 ft pounds
Sorry i think you where misinformed.
If you would have a very high bc 140 grainer or so it might change things.
Or if you put a round nose in a 308.

This all doesn't matter anyway, at least for me I wouldn't think of
putting up the rifle on deer if it's much over 250yds, exept if it has to be.
So both cal would be fine. The flatter shooting 25-06 is an advantage
if one has little time for fancy range finding.
And as long as we don't have pigs here, in that case I'd prefer the 30.
