243or 308

My feo told me that when we go lead free the 243 won't be deer legal so I'm holding onto my 308 just in case anyone up to date with this thanks

He is talking BS. I would keep both anyway. 243 great for small deer and foxes, 308 does the rest. With lighter copper bullets, shoots flat too. If keeping one then keep 308.

It will be like the demise of the 6.5 Mannlicher when min velocity requirements of 2450 fps were introduced. Factory ammo traditionally loaded a long round-nose bullet atc 2400 fps. But of course easy enough to load a 140hn at 2650 fps. Indeed Kynochammo produce such a load. But FEOs deemed that the 6.5 MS was obsolete so forced a change for many.

With the 243 and non toxic

In England - plenty of good options available in 75 and 80gn bullet weights. There is no velocity or bullet weight requirement, just min muzzle energy which is easily exceeded by these non toxic loads.

In Scotland for Roe - no issues, plenty of 75 and 80 gn options.

For bigger deer 100gn min bullet weight is required. A twist rate faster than 1 in 10” has plenty of options.

With traditional 1 in 10” or 1 in10.4” (many European rifles are metric 1 in 210 or 220 mm) options need a short low BC bullet. @Edinburgh Rifles are producing ammo loaded with a 100 Peregrine VRG3 bullet. This a flat nose bullet that shoots very well in my old Heym SR20 and with a typical inch and bit at 100 zero its bang on out to 200 and hold a bit higher for longer ranges. At longer ranges the this will expand down to 1500 fps.

No such thing as " up to date " till the hammer falls ! look at past firearms legislation . An FEO learns most of what they think they know from license holders and anyone who visits shooting forums knows how that usually goes eh? Its been said the Scottish government have said they will re jig the 100 grain rule but just take a look how the air gun thing went on broken promises and Chinese whispers
