.270 for deer

Anyone in the Highlands who stalks deer is looked upon with deep suspicion if they don't have a .270, I have been paid for a Ross Scope repacking job with a couple of boxes of .270 ammo... says it all really!

There's little to choose between a 308 or 270 for deer shooting. Never understood the 270 recoil rep, as I've shot the cal un-moderated and thought it was lower recoil than my 308. For munty I wouldn't use either. I use almost exclusively, my .223 on munty and haven't had one run yet, even at 200 yds. 55grn bullet at 3200 fps MV. Hardly and recoil. As for what people prefer, it can't be anything other than what they shoot. An old saying used to be "beware of the man with one rifle" and that was and probably still is true of the .308 (or 6.5 x 55 or .270, or....). Pick one with terminal ballistics suitable for quarry and range and learn to shoot it. There's a hell of a lot of sense to using as few cals as possible, and preferably one in the UK for all deer species or two at most.

There are also highlanders who will look on you with deep suspicion if you are using one of those new-fangled "motor cars"...

Have got a 270 this season to try on fallow bucks and reds. The comments on damage on muntjac, well I shoot for the shoulders with the 308 to stop them running into thick cover. Virtually no meat on shoulders so whip them off with head during gralloch. Saves time and work, focus on saddle and haunches. Got 118grn yew tree loaded up for the 270 to test. They are shooting well in my friends 270.

No problem @Woodsmoke . Shooting well on paper and my friend "sold" based on sub MOA with them and better groups compared to his 130 grn lead feds. Need to test on fallow bucks next month and reds in Oct.

Thanks for that. What powder are you using with them? I'm thinking N160 will be my likely choice once I start looking to change
