Correct rifle fit notwithstanding shoot one before committing to the acquisition. It might just be your particular shooting style; that’s served you well for 40-years but is less than textbook, is finally found wanting.

Last 270 was a tika t3 lite synthetic, deff kicked harder than new sauer 404 30-06 with a nice stock... as many have said not much in it and a lot to do with the gun.

I had one in a Sako AV for several years, and loved it. I had two loads, the Hornady 130 HP driven as fast as possible that I used for pretty much everything, and a 180 Partition cruising along for big reds in the roar.
Then I realised the 130 HP's did it all anyway, and rebarreled it to 6.5/06 and shot that.
I've been thinking about one again to shoot 208 grain eld/m at long range. Probably end up building another 280, but it won't make much difference either way.

I put away about 30 sambar with my M70 `06 over the last couple of years and a mate asked me "howz it go"
I answered "it does the job but it does not put the big deer down with the authority of my 7mm mag."
(equal bullet weights and ammo brand btw.)
But then I can say much the same for my 9.3 x 64 re the 7mm mag...and on it goes!

I have a CZ 550 FS ("Stutzen" i.e. Mannlicher style) with a 525 mm barrel (20.7 in.). There no moderator neither muzzle brake, but only the original rubber pad. I am at least the third owner of that rifle and I don't understand why the previous owners (2 at least) got rid of it. In my hands, the rifle culled a number of roe and moufflon does, as well as few plains game in South Africa. Due to the scope parallax I limit my shots to 200 m, but at 150 m the accuracy is better than expected.
It's not all about the science. If you fancy a 30-06 then get one. have an unmoderated Sauer 202 in 30-06 that i really like. Great for Africa and fine on the stags and recoil not an issue when hunting. On the range or woodland stalking for roe and fallow I prefer my moderated 6.5 x55.
I have a semi-custom 30-06, so I'm unsure as to how relevant my experience would be related to what I suspect is a lighter factory rifle like the one the OP suggested.
However, I love my aught-six
It has knocked over all six species of UK deer for - doesn't blow the wee ones apart, knocks the big ones down quickly
It can handle a variety of bullet weights and I've cooked up a few home-loads to take advantage of that
All that said, I'd happily use a .270w, .308w, 300WM or one of the many 7 or 6.5mm cartridges if it was easier to vary an FAC here

I was getting 2900fps with 168gr in .308.
I think the differences between them are so small as to be not worth worrying about, at least until you start trying to load bullets > 180gr or so.

That's a very hot load. Infact even very hot for a 30-06
46.8gr of Rs52.Interested to know powder and charge - 200 fps more than Viht’s hottest .308 168 grainer load is some difference!
It did rattle the teeth a bit…
