.30-06 opinions

I am sorry, not wishing at all to be a PITA - I don’t get the velocity of 2,900 for that bullet - RS data shows 46.3gns (0.5 gns less) pushing a 168 at 2270fps soooo it suggests that something is wrong somewhere - could be me of course….

24” barrel?

Sorry - I was off a little bit. Here are chrono readings from that load:

Wow! Not doubting your figures at all but conscious that some newbies on this site might, just might, try to replicate your velocities - with “surprising” results!
Thanks for that.

I just noticed - you’ve entered RS62 here. I was using RS52. 168gr ELDM bullet

Ahah! Obviously the keyboard predictive text eejit on the magic lantern should have stayed in his nice warm bed today. That said…

That looks like only 45.5 gr? The chrono didn't lie...

Anyway - I don't have a .308 anymore. Currently loading a much more sedate load for a Creedmoor and not having my fillings shaken out. I should add that I was shooting that .308 un-moderated!

I suppose the other issue in the 308 v 30-06 debate is not the real facts but the perception of them. I have a 30-06 and I very much doubt if I would notice any difference between that and a 308 with the same twist rate, however I know of two estates that discourage the use of 308s, as they are apparently not flat enough for hill deer and when I was looking to book to go to Africa, one place only allowed 30-06, as they felt a 308 was not powerful enough.

I realise that none of this is actually true, however, it does matter if you are booking stalking.

Another consideration is that a good friend of mine is having difficulties on his renewal, as he has a 30-06, which his constabulary now consider too powerful for UK use.

I have been using a Sauer 30-06 for the past 8years now. I reload 150gr bullets for the UK and 165gr for driven boar and plains game in Africa. I don’t have a problem with recoil

With the benefit of hindsight it would my cartridge of choice, if I were starting out again. My second choice would be a 7x64, however does etc are harder to come by.

Maybe I should’ve mentioned I’m around 5,10” and about 17 stone so I’m not too little or light 😂 don’t think the aught six will knock me over lol
Maybe not, but when it comes to heavy recoil there are folk who believe that being small enough to roll with the recoil rather than absorb it can be a good thing. It won't knock you over, but it may make you flinch.

I don't find the .30-06 overly harsh but compared to your .25-06 it'll give you a good nudge. How much do you mind being nudged? I'm 5'6 and 14 stone, my cut off point for comfort is when I cross from .375H&H to .416 Rigby. But then I've seen a video of a ten year old kid sending multiple .470 Nitro rounds down range with great success - fair play to him because I'd struggle to hold it together!

There does not seem to be an absolute correlation between shooter's stature and their recoil absorbing ability. As per your observation:

I definitely think felt recoil is something you need to calibrate for yourself.

And know that not all rifles are equal: a heavier rifle with a better recoil pad will feel more comfortable to shoot than a lighter rifle cycling an identical cartridge.

With specific reference to the .308 vs 30.06 conversation, the Chuck Hawks table shows approx 10% recoil energy difference between them throwing a same-weight projectile at similar speeds. Can anyone discern a 10% difference?

I've not found any of the usual stalking smallbores to have excessive recoil, and all are easy to shoot with due diligence.
I've never messed up a shot due to recoil, it has always been because I aimed in the wrong place.

I decided a couple of years ago to opt for a 30-06 as it would be my only CF and was also be used for driven boar. Plus with the lighter mono bullets the trajectory is fairly flat. Although I am very used to spending all day on a clay range I'd never shot a centre fire before so was a little worried about recoil considering that I was jumping up from a .177 air rifle :-| Not to worry, I found it fine and if doing a longer range day something like a 123 grain bullet (Sako gamehead) works well with little recoil. A great all round calibre to do everything (my choice was in a Sauer 101 Alaska).
