Currently trying to sell my bergara b14 HMR in .308.

Am looking to replace with a sako s20.

Have heard good and bad about the sako. Someone recently said it’s awful at recoil reduction in .308.

Any thoughts?

Given that .308 has little recoil and the s20 is heavy, the source of that might be questionable.

Why would an s20 in .308 specifically be bad at recoil reduction 😂

Recoil is very a function of the cartridge used and weight of the rifle. This gives you the recoil velocity and energy. Bigger / faster the cartridge the more energy, heavier rifle slows it down.

How the rifle feels and handles recoil is very much a function of the stock shape, fit and how the shooter perceives the recoil. And some who is tall and lean will have a very different from somebody round and fleshy. It also depends on sensitivity, injury and position you are shooting from.

Only way you tell if a rifle shoots well for you is to at least handle it, and preferably shoot it.

Yes I agree. Have handled one but no chance of being able to shoot on in .308 in my area. The source was from a gunshop worker heavy built who says he would avoid one as the recoil was much more significant than other rifles. I’m no pussy when it comes to recoil but it’s always nice to use a rifle that manages it well due to how it’s built.

No idea. The guy who told me said it was awful in .308. I’ve shot many rifles in .308 and some seem a lot better to shoot in .308 but having picked one up and liked the ergonomics of it I wanted to ask was his statement true

I‘ve shot the S20 in 6.5CM with 140 gn bullets. That was like stroking a pussy cat.
Whie I am not a particular fan of the S20 for its yogurt-cup-like stock, recoil transmition to the shoulder is definitely not a problem.

My opinion is that the Sako S20 is a turd.

This has been formed by seeing numerous S20s jamb or fail to fire. The magazine is pants and the Rifle is an over priced Tikka in a fancy stock.

The follower can flip over and the mag will double feed.

I guess opinions are like assholes, everybody has one.

I've had an S20 in .308 now for year, maybe more and have never experienced any of this. Gun is a tack driver and very comfortable to shoot.

Doesn't say much about the guy or the gunshop.

.308 in general, isn't known for being recoil heavy. I've had a tikka .308 and now have S20 .308, the S20 manages recoil better than the tikka. Probably due to the tiny (another poster said it was heavy - its not..) bit of extra weight over a tikka and ergo stock

Ye I’m fine with .308 but it’s always nice to have a rifle that will dampen any recoil of any calibre. Had somone today say avoid the s20 as it’s not a great rifle. I I’ll look at Mauser or sauer like I have already.

To each their own I suppose. I'd go out and shoot one if you can

The S20 is heavier than a lot of comparable rifles, and therefore on weight alone should soak up a bit more recoil despite the plasticky stock. 308W isn’t heavy recoiling, but if you really want to reduce felt recoil fit a Limbsaver but pad.
