410 reloading

Marlin 444 brass cases work well for 410 If you don’t need 3” . I have used the 444 brass in my 410 just siliconed the top wad to seal the shot .
303 brass is also a possibility if the case is blown out so I am informed.

I made up some dies for loading 410. Bored out a Lee 45acp carbide sizing die for resizing on a press.
A 45-70 shell holder fits. I modified the decapping rod in a Lee universal decapping die to knock the primers out.
Not difficult to do with a mallet and punch and use a suitable socket to support the head of the case.
Made up another punch to seat the primers on the press.
Bought a cheap roll crimp and some over shot discs.

Mec600 does it all including resizing, not cheap to buy but I tend to buy once and cry once.
All you need to do is buy the different calibre specific bars and away you go.

Here's something apparently available over here in the US

And there's this (but feck knows if it is still a live going concern, those prices seem insanely low)

Use nail varnish, its less messy.
444 marlin brass may need the rim turned in a lathe to fit some 410 shotguns and larger wads to get a good burn.
Never tried 303 brass but understand it can be used.

Personally I would save your money, re crimping .410 cases is not very successful also quite often the fired case is damaged at the crimp. New cases will work but you will likely need to replace the plastic start crimp with a metal one.
By far roll turnover is easier and gives better results for .410. Sold my hushpower sometime back and RTO tool for .410 as decided I was not the best shot using it and with the likely lead ban it would become redundant or expensive to use with bismuth or ideally tungsten shot.

You’ve obviously not used the mec600 then?
I’ve never had any problems with damaged cases, crimp or rolled turnovers using one.

Yes please mate what trade do you have in mind
Steve

Hi Steve,
Messaged the seller and he was just relisting the 410 on ebay.

Make sure its suitable for your needs. You'll need a lee loadall to use them.

If you can't / don't want to use ebay, I'll get them for you but you'll end up paying for them + postage from me.

Cheers

I have two one for 12gauge one for 20gauge.

So I have plenty of experience using them. I modified the 20gauge using GAEP start crimp and other parts I machined up to allow for 28gauge and .410 to be loaded.
.410 was as said a pain their case life is not good and you seldom find any or many in the bins at clay grounds unlike 12gauge so you end up using new cases and even then it was better to roll crimp the case which also resulted in maximum case life.

You cannot roll turnover on a mec600.
