Sold: 4x4 Car/SUV

Hi all,

I’ve currently got an Audi A6 Avant S-Line that, all being well, will be sold on Tuesday.

I’m considering just getting something to use as a runaround and for shooting etc.

Something like a Subaru Forester could suit.

Is anyone looking to move anything like that on? Budget of around £3k!

I think you might be in luck if you look for an 05 forester around London. Non ulez compliant.

Exactly the same model built in 06 completely compliant…..

Getting a good one is a different matter… put £1000 aside for welding. Ive just been through this process…..

Both will do the job of the Subaru and not end up a orange pile of oxide

Plenty of P2 xc70 around Whixh are reasonable priced but you do need an understanding of Swedish mechanics (Volvo vida software diagnostics) to keep them going

Be aware of the xc70, when things start to go, and they do, it gets really expensive. We have the ‘fancy’ version and at just over 100k miles it’s suddenly needing between £3k and £5k every year in servicing and repairs in suspension, engine, awd, this and that electronics.

We have had 6 Volvo’s and the last two have show a dramatic decline in quality and a steep increase in cost of repairs.

done, finished, no more Volvo’s…

My office bought two top range xc90’s, both fallen to bits and failing in all fronts.

Sad, but if they don’t find their good old ‘Volvo’ ways again, it could be Saab all over.

not to say there’s not good ones out there, but it’s a gamble, and when that auto box fails in the 70, which they do eventually - it’s a scrap job

Subaru - yes, but parts? And do you want to be ‘that guy’?

As for good £3k options… don’t think there are unless you are just lucky and find an old careful lady driver who just gave up driving and has no children to set her straight on price

Have a look at toyota rav 4. That's what I've settled on for now and is doing surprisingly well.

I'd recommend an nissan x trail t30 or the t31. I've had both & brilliant family car & didn't let me down when out shooting whatever.

For a runaround and for shooting and even towing, my duster 4wd is ace. Drove it to south of France with all the family in the summer, less fun but it seemed very at home. Tow my boat with it no problem despite it only being 1.2 petrol.

Hasn’t gone wrong but I guarantee when it does it will be cheap to fix.

A bit thirsty but if it is just a runaround then shouldn’t be a drama.

Paint finish is soft and rubbish. A bird poo for a week and the lacquer crackles a bit. But no rust so far.

I don’t think they’d have the ground clearance - same issue as my A6. The Skoda Octavia Scout could be an option, or a VW Passat Alltrack.

Problem is I enjoy putting my foot down every now and then!

It was in 1999 when AB Volvo sold its automobile division Volvo Cars to Ford Motor Co. On 28 March 2010, Ford then sold the loss-making Volvo Cars to Chinese Geely.
I did 2 months at Volvo Gothenburg on an ev project in 1995 but the CAD system they used was not the one I knew so they blew me out.

They are less prone, and for your budget you’d get a pretty recent one
