I have the VW Passat Alltrack 2014 plate
I've done 28k miles in it in 18 months. Hasn't missed a beat and the room inside and ride quality is brilliant.
I've fitted new tyres, a couple of basic suspension bits and given it 3 services in that time.
Averaging 48-52mpg doesn't go amiss either.
I had mine remapped from 140-180bhp and that helped the MPG figures too.
Your budget will hamper what you want/can get though.

They are, but hold value.
The Octavia Scout would be the better bet.
Smaller marginally as it's based off of the golf chassis, whereas the Superb (not sure they come in Scout format) is the same size as the Passat and A6
The seat Leon allroad will be a cheaper option. We bought one new and picked it over the all track. Same car really. But it's been a good car. I couldn't see the price difference inside to make us buy the VW
It's surprising where it will go if it doesn't bottom out.

I bought the Mrs the Skoda Octavia scout on a bit of a whim, good for winter roads getting to work and soft off roading on the farm, it’s bloody incredible and with half decent tyres goes really well, slightly higher ground clearance than the Octavia and stiffer suspension I believe.
Mpg is awesome and I would look for on other one if I ever have to replace this
Blimey you may have been unlucky. I have a D5 V70 geartronic so FWD only. A bearing in the alternator went at 100k and I was disgusted that at 295k I've just had to replace a track rod end!Be aware of the xc70, when things start to go, and they do, it gets really expensive. We have the ‘fancy’ version and at just over 100k miles it’s suddenly needing between £3k and £5k every year in servicing and repairs in suspension, engine, awd, this and that electronics.
We have had 6 Volvo’s and the last two have show a dramatic decline in quality and a steep increase in cost of repairs.
done, finished, no more Volvo’s…
My office bought two top range xc90’s, both fallen to bits and failing in all fronts.
Sad, but if they don’t find their good old ‘Volvo’ ways again, it could be Saab all over.
not to say there’s not good ones out there, but it’s a gamble, and when that auto box fails in the 70, which they do eventually - it’s a scrap job
Subaru - yes, but parts? And do you want to be ‘that guy’?
As for good £3k options… don’t think there are unless you are just lucky and find an old careful lady driver who just gave up driving and has no children to set her straight on price
Other than that its just been consumables so tyres, pads, filters, discs etc. It gets serviced every 20k and has averaged a measured 46mpg over the last 265k miles since I bought it - best car I've ever had and the gearbox has never been serviced!

Have you considered a Honda CRV? They are an AWD car as opposed to a proper 4x4 but there have been a few good comments about them on here. I needed something cheap and cheerful after the demise of my Freelander 2 and so far so good although I’m a bit more cautious where I go with it. The boot is bigger and the 45p a mile I get for work goes a bit further. There are a lot of them about so finding a suitable one shouldn’t be to difficult if suitable.
