Afternoon,
After some advice from a vet please ,
What do you know about PDA in a puppy that is 3 1/2 months old ?
Long story but a it’s been diagnosed first of all as a heart murmur then this pda .
Apparently it can be operated on but for £4500 .
is this to early to be operating on a such a young dog and is it needed?
please pm if you don’t want to reply on open forum
Thanks

The ductus arteriosus is a blood vessel that is meant to close shortly after birth. If it doesn't close, it becomes a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). Its essentially a link between two major blood vessels - the pulmonary artery and the aorta.

That's right - the presence of a PDA makes a loud and constant heart murmur
Apparently it can be operated on but for £4500 .
There are different ways to fix them - it can be done 'keyhole' which has fewer complications and doesn't require opening the chest, but not that many places do it and it requires a lot of specialist kit. It can be done 'open' where you open the chest and tie off the PDA. The open approach tends to be cheaper, and can be done by more practices, as you need less kit, but slightly more aftercare.

The sooner it is done the better. The longer the PDA remains patent the greater the chance of heart failure (with long term consequences) and death. Long term prognosis for a puppy with a swiftly corrected PDA is good.

Hope that's helpful?

Best,
HT
