Alternative to Land Rover products.

Cayenne ?

Same platform and engine as Toureg
I met a Netherlands Baron on my DSC1 course in 2011, he had one and could not fit offroad tyres on the thing as the wheel wells were too small. I am only guilty for the first gens instrument panel though.

There seems to be plenty of people who have kitted Gen1 and 2 Cayenne out for off-road use - my local Porsche garage has one on display at the entrance to the premises

Must be a viable alternative if using the Toureg in the discussion - one of the guns on the estate shoot has a newish model Cayenne it appears to get everywhere the other vehicles used by the guns get to

Seem fairly capable

So sad ...

Freelander 2 - died (propshafts & gearbox)
Disco 2 - died (brain)
Disco 3 - survived !
RR L322 - died (gearbox all over the M5)

now - Ford Ranger WildTrak

Yes, that is what my research has pointed me towards. But hopefully, my freelander will give me a few years service, by which time, the 2012 full fat May be too old.
Mind you, might have won the lottery by then.
They’ve dropped on price massively over the past year or so.

2012 full fat, digi dash, 4.4 tdv8. The last of the decent ones. Get one that’s been looked after and they are fantastic!
2013 westminster was the last rangie i owned , engine detonated after numerous faults requiring recovery

just like every other LR product i have owned !

Hi.
I did not want to hijack 'Bukshot's' thread on Disco 5 and their reliability.

So my question is, what does that leave a person wanting that type of vehicle? Something comfortable to travel a distance, be decent off road when you get there, have a decent amount of room in it, sort of disco 4 type internal space thing. Most of all decent reliability. Maybe petrol as an option? Modern Diesels are a nightmare.

Any suggestions?

anything but LR products !

ask yourself what your priorities are , decent off road means compromising on tyres , great on the road means compromising off road ability since tyres make the greatest difference ?

most bog standard 4x4's are way more capable than their owners in the rough stuff , mostly people get stuck in slippy mud due to road tyres and blame the motor.........

Over numerous years I have utilized various Landrover products as well as one or two alternative brands of 4x4's, indeed I had a business re-furbishing "TD5 Defenders",i still own two Landrovers one being an Over-finch. My requirements similar to yours i.e. "Something comfortable to travel a distance, be decent off road when you get there, have a decent amount of room in". by far the best Purchase i made one i still own running as well as the date procured is a Disco 4 SDV6 Commercial. It as everything, re-claim the Vat, low road tax, returns 30Mpg/Gall + on a run, has the space & comfort in abundance. Produced through Landrover Special Vehicles section everything is done really well behind the front seats, were as in front you have everything (Luxury) bells & whistles you would in a 5 seater SDV6 Disco. With 91K now on the clock I have recently been tempted to trade and go with a New Defender 110 HT, and although i have the means i am finding it a real wrench to let this Disco go just because it offers such fantastic value for money. Inbox me if seriously interested for more details, quality ones are hard to find but if you do come accross one you will be hard pressed to find a better tool for the job.

Mates who have jumped from D4s to newer stuff have been disappointed. D4 has the versatility that nothing else gives in my opinion. Ok the crank could snap, but that’s a mechanical risk on any other car out there. Most modern cars suffer with major electrical gremlins, that are almost impossible to fix as they tend to be ecu driven and no matter how many hours a tech spends, he won’t find or fix the fault. I’ll stay running older more mechanical cars as long as I can.

I have puma defender but after a nightmare ownership with a Disco 5, wouldnt buy JLR. Indeed the choice is limited. Top of my list is the Touareg 2021 on. Be replacing a family hatchback, back up stalking car and family bus.

It's a real shame Land Rover can't get their act together regarding reliability because if not for that, they'd be up there, if not the best utility up market 4X4s. I've had 2 Discovery 2's and a Discovery 4. They were all I wanted. Except for reliability. The first Disco2 I had managed to get every single fault they were known for in my ownership. The second actually proved pretty good but it was a pared down version with no air suspension, sunroofs or other extras that tend to break. Then I bought a Disco4. During the warranty period it had a few problems and that continued after the warranty expired. It was a lovely car to drive, successfully being a great luxury car and mixing top notch off road credentials. But the problems and, probably more importantly the cost to remedy them was fairly continuous.

Other vehicles seem to compromise, either being pretty good off road but agricultural on it or the other way around. Pickups are, of course a different beast. Toyotas are a great alternative though. Not needing the load carrying abilities now and not doing as much off road stuff now I don't keeper any more, I've gone for a VW Tiguan 4motion, which fits the bill for me. Of course there are quite a few similar mid range vehicles with some degree of off road ability which, to be honest would do most people rather than having a big behemoth, if only some people's egos would let them get one. Although if you need a vehicle to stuff a big red in, look elsewhere!

Fool me once...or something along those lines

Hello, Any Land Rover owners know of this Company, Allmakes PR 2 4 X 4 Ltd, They have just moved into a new Warehouse on Milton Park,

Hi.
Thank you to everyone for helping with a reply. Has given me some head scratching to be getting on with.

At the moment i have a 2008 Grand Cherokee, the one with the V6 Mercedes diesel. It has been a really good vehicle. Proper 4x4, low box etc, plenty of room, yet supremely comfy on a long journey, no DPF either. I would like a later model Jeep but the engines are akin to land rover ones, they tend to 'blow up'. They use the Fiat ecodiesel. Parts prices are laughable too.

I did have a Freelander 1 and it was possibly the worst car ever made. Had Honda or Toyota built them they would have been great.

I do not fancy a pick up truck. Too agricultural. No offence to anyone that has one.

Someone mentioned Landcruiser. I presume not the Amazon? Are Toyota Diesel engines and emission systems reliable? One of my problems is a lot of short journeys that DPF do not like. As i said, my Jeep has no DPF so not an issue. £700 a year tax on the Jeep is a killer too.

Can't afford new so Bombadier etc is out of question.

Get a Touareg I have had one since 2015 that I gave my folks it’s now done 115k and aside from consumable parts it’s never missed a beat and even on the low profile tyres it’s been capable of everything I have thrown at it off road including 4 years living in the mountains of Europe, if it had proper tyres would be very good granted not capable like a truck or Land Rover but wins in other places. Economy is solid for a big car and remapped at 300bhp it’s got a ton of poke and could probably pull an ocean liner.

Wouldn’t have a Porsche ( not that there not good vehicles) for the simple reason anything Porsche that requires main dealer or approved garage is bloody expensive as my mate with a macan just found out. VW in comparison always been reasonable.

Try a Audi Q5 I have had 3 from 2012 to the present time only spent £23 on an exhaust sensor that failed other than the low cost servicing, oil change every 2 years. mine have been diesels with fuel consumption over 55MPG on the latest one on a run.
Good off road as well as on road.

Can vouch for the Q5

Though mine doesn’t do much more than 35 mpg ,,,in Sq5 spec

Hi
I never really considered an Audi. Are the newer VAG diesel engines and emission systems reliable? I think they offer a petrol too.

Get a Toyota, they might not be sexy, the interior may not be fancy, but they tend to just work. We’re currently on the 5th and 6th Toyota in the family, all stayed 15 plus years, reliable as a stone, given regular maintenance.
