I've found some of this ammunition in .223 for £8.50 a box! It's fmj, and touted as being perfect for practice and large use. Has anyone got any experience of this stuff? It's manufactured by Federal apparently, and I'm a big fan of their Powershok offering for my .270 factory rounds. It just seems extremely cheap to me. Or am I looking a gift horse in the mouth, d'you think? :-|

Just file off the bullet tips and you'll probably have a great Roe load.

I was wondering about that, as it happens. don't most fmj have exposed lead at the base though? And if so, wouldn't filing the tip cause the core and jacket to separate?

If it works that would be fantastic!

If separation happens it's because the lead comes out the front (jacket gets left behind). I doubt that the exposed lead on the boat tail would have adverse effects.

Definitely worthy buying some at that price for cheap fun anyway.

SP cartridges for stalking won't break the bank though, unless you buy from some Aberdeenshire RFD's....

Used them at work in 308 and with a friend in 223 and they were accurate enough to have fun shooting to 200m. At that price I'd snap them up.

I’ve got a few America Eagle .22lr HV’s here. Never seen CF ammo though. But at that price it’s as cheap as chips.

Really good stuff, in white card boxes?

Not sure of the packaging, FB. I've only seen it advertised on my local guys website. I'll certainly be picking up at least a couple of boxes though! My new rifle should arrive with him on Monday, so I'll grab a couple then.

This is the stuff . . .

American Eagle is everyday stuff here. Works well and the brass is good to reload. Everyone used to file the nose off of 30-06 service ammunition when i was a kid. Horror stories about the lead core being shot through the bore and the jacket being stuck in the barrel seemed to be unfounded. I knew lots of guys who did it.~Muir

Jeez Louise! It is an unsafe practice.

The lead core can be blown through the jacket leaving the jacket in the barrel. The idea was tried maybe nearly a hundred years ago with surplus FMJ .303 Mk VI.

The thing being "circumcised" as it might be put. Then exposed lead then being swaged to a roundnose shape. The whole many many thousands of rounds were condemned. Given that .303 moves at a leisurely 2,450 fps I'd expect that wit the quick stepping .223" and .308" that the risk would be increased. Please don't do it.

Used these in the US-perfectly decent budget type ammo that you would buy in Bass Pro or Walmart. For the price mentioned I’d fill my boots.

These guys I remember would file the nose back to expose lead, not remove the ogival area of the bullet. I shoot a lot of steel cased Russian 7.62x39 ammunition and have been concentrating on finding a HP or SP that expands reliably. In my experimenting it was found that the most accurate and powerful HP round I use has an exposed lead base. I haven't shot a core through the jacket yet. ~Muir

I have used Bremmer .308 with just a smidgen of the nose to expose the lead core with no detrimental affects.
A few years ago a German friend of mine used 7.62 with the nose filed back to expose the lead core and he used hundreds of them on boar to good effect with no problems at all.
I should imagine there might be a problem if you took the nose back enough to make the Jacket wall parallel.

This comes in a red box in 2 weights 55gr & 62gr. Make sure you get the 55fgr for the CZ.
It’s made at the Lake City Arsenal & headstamped F C 223. The primer pockets are crimped btw. :)

I've previously used this ammo in .223 in a Tikka T3 tactical, it wasn't super accurate in my rifle but certainly good enough at that price.

Cheers! Be great if they are decent at that price. The closest thing price wise, I guess, would be the PPU stuff and I hear terrible reviews for that. Only other thing I’ve come across is a bloke online who sells surplus 5.56 Ball
